(Brad Ryan/Special to the Tri-City Record)

One of San Juan County’s most anticipated culinary events is making its return this summer, as the Macaroni and Cheese Festival of the Four Corners, presented by Hutton Broadcasting, welcomes guests to a cheesy afternoon along the Animas River.

This year’s festival is scheduled for Saturday, June 21, and will run from 1 p.m. to 5 p.m. at the Berg Park Pavilion. The annual event celebrates the beloved food in many forms. Local restaurants and chefs will compete for top honors as they serve their takes on the classic dish, ranging from traditional recipes to bold, inventive variations featuring ingredients like truffle oil, lobster, and Hatch green chili.

The event continues to grow in popularity after last year’s successful festival, which drew hundreds of attendees to Berg Park. Visitors sampled mac and cheese dishes crafted by some of San Juan County’s top culinary talents, alongside local beers, wines and cocktails. The Best Mac and Cheese award ultimately went to the team from Toke Dispensary, who impressed the crowd with their standout dish.

<img decoding="async" src="https://imengine.public.prod.dur.navigacloud.com/?uuid=f83046ed-067b-5479-8740-efa1ed5ffde0&function=cover&type=preview&source=false&width=2000" width="2000" height="1696" alt="The Toke Dispensary won first place for its entry in the Mac and Cheese Festival contest at the 2024 Macaroni and Cheese Festival. (Brad Ryan/Special to the Tri-City Record)

In addition to unlimited mac and cheese samples, festivalgoers can enjoy live music, entertainment, local vendor booths and access to an impressive selection of craft beers, wines, and specialty cocktails from area businesses. The afternoon will feature games, a mechanical bull and artisan booths from local makers.

The Boys and Girls Club of Farmington will have a strong presence at the event, organizing the majority of the volunteers and benefiting directly from the proceeds.

“We organize the majority of the volunteers and then we receive funding in exchange for that,” said Michelle Meyering, CEO of the club. “So typically it’s between $4,000 and $5,000 that comes back to the club.”

Meyering also added that the funds raised go toward general operating needs, including after-school and summer programs.

“We rely on community support. We’re not part of the city budget,” she said. “Any extra funding really helps us in able to keep our fees low. For after school, we’re at $10 a week. For the summer, we’re at $10 or less a day for parents.”

The club will have a booth at the festival and its staff will be volunteering throughout the day.

Beyond fundraising, Meyering said the festival serves as a reminder of the club’s impact.

“A lot of the attendees have either been former club members or their kids come to the club,” she said. “So I think having us out in the community really demonstrates our commitment not just to our club kids, but to the community as a whole.”

She shared an example of the club’s impact, recalling, “We had a grandma who had to drive to Missouri and get her daughter and grandkids from a domestic violence situation. We made sure we could get those students involved in the programming so mom could focus on getting housing and getting a job.”

The situation, she said, showed how important it is for families in crisis to have access to safe, supportive environments for their children. The support is made possible, in part, through the funding and awareness raised by the festival and similar events.

All-inclusive general admission is $35 and includes unlimited mac and cheese tastings, opportunities for full pours, an 8.5 ounce. commemorative wine glass, a cocktail plate, and two voting tokens to help decide the winner of this year’s mac and cheese crown.

The event is strictly 21 and over, with ID required for entry. Tickets are available in advance and are expected to sell quickly, as the festival has grown in popularity year after year.

Lawn chairs and blankets are welcome, but attendees are asked to leave tents, umbrellas, and outside food and drinks at home. Pets are not permitted, though service animals with proper documentation are allowed.

For those planning to indulge, Let’s Go Taxi will be on-site to offer safe ride options, and organizers strongly encourage attendees to arrange a designated driver.

The event will be held rain or shine, and no refunds will be issued after entry.

“We just have a great community and we just love that people show up to support one another and to support our kids,” Meyering said.

For tickets and more information, visit https://visitfourcorners.com/macaroni-and-cheese-festival-2/

and macaroni and cheese were plentiful at the annual festival June 22 in Berg Park.
