He said \"Partiotism and concern brought him out today.\"(Jen Magnuson\/Special to The Journal)<\/span><span class=\"credit\">Jennifer Magnuson<\/span><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<\/p>\n<p>The League of Women Voters of Montezuma County will hold a rally Saturday in Cortez that coincides with national \u201cNo Kings\u201d rallies planned for Flag Day.<\/p>\n<p>The rallies are founded on the theme \u201cIn America, we don\u2019t do kings,\u201d according to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nokings.org\/\" id=\"link-647bf53996a35eedc1a09ffdc68c5599\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">nokings.org<\/a>. The \u201cNo Kings Montezuma\u201d rally runs from 1 p.m. to 2:30 p.m. at the Welcome Center, and one in Durango\u2019s Buckley Park runs from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m.<\/p>\n<p>Because of the partisan nature of the \u201cNo Kings\u201d approach, local League of Women Voters President Karen Sheek said they are promoting the event as a Flag Day rally to \u201csupport democracy\u201d and celebrate the American flag.<\/p>\n<p>The flag officially became a symbol of American ideals on June 14, 1777. Centuries later, Flag Day is celebrated on June 14 to remember that foundation.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis nation was founded on protests,\u201d Sheek said. \u201cThis is an opportunity to raise our voices and protest things we feel are wrong and get our representative\u2019s attention.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe\u2019ve found that many people are concerned about things happening and aren\u2019t sure what to do,\u201d she said. \u201cThey call, email and write their representatives and concerning decisions continue to be made.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The rally is an opportunity to gather, Sheek said, and \u201craise our voices with others who are also concerned.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Participants are asked to meet at the Welcome Center parking lot in Cortez at 1 p.m. \u201carmed with your American flag and a protest sign of your choice,\u201d whether it concern public lands, Medicaid, cuts to veterans benefits, or otherwise.<\/p>\n<p>People are also encouraged to bring food donations for the Good Samaritan Center, and are asked to not park in the Welcome Center or swimming pool parking lots.<\/p>\n<p>Organizers plan to set up information tables detailing \u201cimportant local agencies.\u201d There will be drums and bells for folks to play during chants.
