Southwest Colorado-based filmmaker Michael Bud<\/a> and his team at Box Canyon Film recently won a Gold Telly Award<\/a> for a commercial they filmed in Montezuma County.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe are blessed to live in one of the most scenic parts of the country, so taking advantage of our backyard was non-negotiable,\u201d Bud said. \u201cEverything was filmed around Cortez and Dolores.\u201d<\/p>\n

The 30-second video advertises a Ford F250 for Keesee Motor Co. in Cortez. A local actor posed as a rancher to keep the storyline \u201crelatable.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cWe wanted to break that mold of local dealership commercials,\u201d Bud said. \u201cNo Ford\u2019s stock footage, no cheesy dealership floor shots.\u201d<\/p>\n

And the key to doing that, he explained, was exceptional planning.<\/p>\n\n

It starts with \u201cunderstanding who\u2019s your audience and what is the core idea you\u2019re trying to convey,\u201d he said. \u201cEvery decision, every cut, every frame has a meaning and serves its purpose because you need to tell a story in 30 seconds.\u201d<\/p>\n

Before they filmed, then, they had \u201ca detailed plan with storyboards\u201d so they knew what shots they needed and where and what time of day to shoot them.<\/p>\n

\u201cIf you\u2019ve done your preparation right, filming is easy,\u201d he said. \u201cYou just go down the list.\u201d<\/p>\n

Though, \u201cbe ready to pivot,\u201d because \u201cunexpected challenges is a part of the job description in film production.\u201d<\/p>\n

Bud remembered how, right before the photo shoot, a rainstorm \u201cwashed out some roads and made the first location of the day inaccessible.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cFor the rest of the day, we were chasing light,\u201d he said. \u201cEric Fulcher, my gaffer, was able to mitigate that.\u201d<\/p>\n

He said he \u201cfrequently works with the same crew,\u201d and gave a special shoutout to Andrew Jeske \u2013 \u201ca seasoned copywriter from the East Coast\u201d \u2013 for \u201cexquisite scripts.\u201d<\/p>\n

Bud also recognized LA-based Shaley Brooks for \u201chis expertise in color grading\u201d that \u201chelped us dial in the look.\u201d<\/p>\n

Since 1979, the Telly Awards have recognized \u201cexcellence in video and television across all screens.\u201d It was \u201cfounded \u2026 to honor local, regional and cable television commercials, with non-broadcast video and television programming added soon after,\u201d according to its website.<\/a><\/p>\n

More than 13,000 filmmakers and creatives enter from six continents around the world and a \u201cdiverse judging body of over 250 executives\u201d review submissions, the website reads.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt\u2019s an honor to get a nod from the jury at Telly Awards,\u201d Bud said. \u201cWe have very talented film crews here \u2026 (and) it brings more attention to Southwest Colorado.\u201d<\/p>\n

There are 13 categories, and Box Canyon Film won in the Local TV category.<\/p>\n

\u201cAdvertising is not about just selling, it\u2019s about connecting the right product to the right people. Otherwise, it\u2019s a wasted effort,\u201d he said. \u201cYour goal is to understand who the product is for, why they care, and how to present it in a way that speaks to their values.\u201d<\/p>\n

He added how \u201cIt\u2019s especially important in local advertising \u2013 too often people forget why we choose local business over ordering online.\u201d<\/p>\n
