(Courtesy Farmington Public Library)<\/span><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<\/p><p>Wolves will again take center stage at the Farmington Public Library as part of its summer reading program, with two educational presentations by Paula Woerner of Wolfwood Refuge on Monday, July 7.<\/p>\n<p>The program will be offered at 11 a.m. and again at 5 p.m., which features live animals and wildlife education. The morning session will include a live animal visit, while the evening session will feature a slideshow and indoor talk.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe did (this event) last year \u2013 that was the first time Farmington libraries had Wolfwood,\u201d said Heather Erlandson, Youth Services Librarian. \u201cWe had a great turnout and people were really happy with it. A lot of people stayed to pet the wolf and pet the dog afterward. Petting the wolf is pretty unique.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><figure class=\"wp-block-image naviga-inline-image\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/imengine.public.prod.dur.navigacloud.com\/?uuid=f79f6bcd-905d-5483-a5b6-3182199d3173&amp;function=cover&amp;type=preview&amp;source=false&amp;width=2000\" width=\"2000\" height=\"1500\" alt=\"First Wolfwood Refuge presentation at the Farmington Public Library's summer reading program in 2024. (Courtesy Farmington Public Library)<\/span><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<\/p><p>The event is part of the library\u2019s effort to provide exciting, hands-on learning opportunities through its summer programming.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s always nice to get kids interested in something or to allow them more experience with something they\u2019re already interested in,\u201d Erlandson explained. \u201cIt\u2019s part of the summer reading program \u2013 we try to capture their interest and give them something cool to look forward to and some great experiences at the library. Woerner, who founded the organization and previously worked as a teacher, presents regularly to schools and libraries. Her experience, Erlandson noted, makes her especially good at connecting with young audiences.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cShe really has a lot of background with working with kids,\u201d Erlandson said. \u201cShe does a great job of managing the kids and answering the questions that they\u2019re going to want to hear and that they\u2019re going to want to ask.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Erlandson believes animal-themed programs like this resonate strongly with local families.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cEverybody seems to love animals, and it\u2019s always interesting to hear how animals are cared for,\u201d Erlandson added. \u201cThey get a lot of information about wolves in captivity or in the rescue, as well as a lot of information about wolves in the wild.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>And for any audience members who might dream of having a wolf as a pet, the event also provides some practical perspective.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s good information for them to have if they\u2019re ever considering having a wolf for a pet \u2013 that it\u2019s probably not their best idea,\u201d Erlandson remarked. \u201cA lot of kids talk about how much they love seeing the wolves and how they didn\u2019t realize how big wolves were. They bring a husky and a wolf-dog mix, and to see the size difference \u2013 it really impresses them.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><figure class=\"wp-block-image naviga-inline-image\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/imengine.public.prod.dur.navigacloud.com\/?uuid=d8859013-6fad-5627-9654-0e8f3a06ef1c&amp;function=cover&amp;type=preview&amp;source=false&amp;width=2000\" width=\"624\" height=\"468\" alt=\"New Mexico Raptors with Laura McMann at the Farmington Public Library\u2019s summer reading program in 2024. (Courtesy Farmington Public Library)<\/span><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<\/p><p>The library\u2019s wildlife presentations have proven to be popular across the board. Earlier this summer, the library hosted New Mexico Raptors with live birds of prey and a Border collie program focused on dog training. Another past program featured marine biologists who shared footage of great white sharks.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe have a lot of parents telling us that they love the programming,\u201d Erlandson said. \u201cThey love being able to come in with their kids and see the same things. Nobody gets to go sit with their kids at school and see all these cool things that happen, so they really like being able to bring their kids in.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>One memorable moment came during a shark presentation, when a young girl waited in line to speak with the presenters because she wants to be a marine biologist. \u201cThis is their interest,\u201d Erlandson said. \u201cThis is the one they\u2019re after.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><figure class=\"wp-block-image naviga-inline-image\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/imengine.public.prod.dur.navigacloud.com\/?uuid=7faba5a5-23c0-5823-9409-6f7e63088138&amp;function=cover&amp;type=preview&amp;source=false&amp;width=2000\" width=\"2000\" height=\"1500\" alt=\"The Ocean Adventure with Wayne and Karen Brown at the Farmington Public Library\u2019s summer reading program in 2024.
