(Joel Priest\/Special to The Journal)<\/span><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<\/p>\n<p>The Montezuma-Cortez School District unanimously adopted an emergency sports <a href=\"https:\/\/go.boarddocs.com\/co\/cortez\/Board.nsf\/files\/DHQVC480092B\/%24file\/JBAA%20DRAFT%20FOR%20PC.pdf\" id=\"link-5ccb747ba749b6785f82d1b5be8dc1d3\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">policy<\/a> on June 24 in an effort to preserve fairness and safety in district sports. It was set to expire in 90 days.<\/p>\n<p>The board also voted to consider the policy for permanent approval \u201cwithin 90 days and to direct administration to join the laws<a href=\"https:\/\/go.boarddocs.com\/co\/cortez\/Board.nsf\/files\/DHQTXB7979CF\/%24file\/%5B01%5D%202025%2005%2009%20Complaint.pdf\" id=\"link-93bdf2b182e41eee942ca43180f61c4a\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">uit cap<\/a>tioned D49 <em id=\"emphasis-fad177f068f85e249780fc6007ee71a4\">v Sullivan et al as a<\/em>n additional plaintiff.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The policy acknowledges inherent biological differences between males and females, noting that boys possess significant athletic advantages that, while not guaranteeing victory, give most a substantial edge over girls in competitive sports. The policy noted that the disparity could displace girls from opportunities if biological males are allowed to compete against them, a trend that has been observed in schools across the country, including in Colorado.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSchools across the country and in Colorado are ignoring this reality and allowing men and boys to compete against women and girls,\u201d the <a href=\"https:\/\/go.boarddocs.com\/co\/cortez\/Board.nsf\/files\/DHQVC480092B\/%24file\/JBAA%20DRAFT%20FOR%20PC.pdf\" id=\"link-42a45a1633d90488a1afe9e11002c383\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">policy<\/a> said. \u201cThis is demeaning, unfair and dangerous to women and girls, and denies women and girls the equal opportunity to participate and excel in competitive sports.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The policy adds that allowing boys to compete in girls\u2019 sports undermines female athletes\u2019 chances for recognition, college scholarships and privacy, especially in instances where locker rooms and hotels are utilized.<\/p>\n<p>The policy defines \u201cbiological sex\u201d based on reproductive biology and genetics at birth, classifying teams as either male, female or coed. Female teams will exclude biological males, and male teams will exclude biological females. Locker rooms and hotel accommodations will be organized by biological sex to ensure safety and privacy for all students.<\/p>\n<p>This decision aligns with President Donald Trump\u2019s Executive Order 14201, which mandates that funds be cut from programs that deny fair athletic opportunities to women and girls.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.govinfo.gov\/content\/pkg\/FR-2025-02-11\/pdf\/2025-02513.pdf\" id=\"link-0e225e0c0b83510cf76c9f95ab15725a\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Executive<\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.govinfo.gov\/content\/pkg\/FR-2025-02-11\/pdf\/2025-02513.pdf\" id=\"link-6b6430b80cf3725347157e00cc73c5ff\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Order<\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.govinfo.gov\/content\/pkg\/FR-2025-02-11\/pdf\/2025-02513.pdf\" id=\"link-e5be739630457817aaefad73ca3ca8db\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">14201<\/a> states, \u201cit is the policy of the United States to rescind all funds from educational programs that deprive women and girls of fair athletic opportunities, which results in the endangerment, humiliation and silencing of women and girls and deprives them of privacy. It shall also be the policy of the United States to oppose male competitive participation in women\u2019s sports more broadly, as a matter of safety, fairness, dignity and truth.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The board, in adopting the emergency policy, cited a district policy that allows for the adoption of policies like this one.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cUnder unusual circumstances, the board may temporarily approve a policy to meet emergency condition,\u201d the policy says. \u201cThis emergency policy can be adopted in a single meeting when it is introduced. An emergency policy may not last longer than 90 days.
