(Cameryn Cass\/The Journal)<\/span><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<\/p>\n<p>In mid-August, Crow Canyon Archaeological Center near Cortez is putting on a traditional food systems workshop in the San Juan Mountains, and the deadline to register is July 17.<\/p>\n<p>The three-day, two-night Indigenous Foodways Workshop is from Aug. 17 to Aug. 19.<\/p>\n<p>Four \u201crenowned\u201d guides and educators will \u201cshare traditional knowledge of American Southwest cuisine and plant history,\u201d according to a news release.<\/p>\n<p>They are:<\/p>\n<div class=\"naviga-element naviga-x-im-unordered-list\"><a href=\"https:\/\/crowcanyon.org\/people\/romero-briones-a-dae\/\" id=\"link-e9b1a700952169d313aae6e9efc9b36f\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">A-dae Romero-Briones<\/a> from Cochiti Pueblo in New Mexico. Her background is in Native agriculture and food systems.<a href=\"https:\/\/crowcanyon.org\/people\/weahkee-mary-motah\/\" id=\"link-13ce12a2e0c35b97faaa3671c7621e94\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Mary Motah Weahkee<\/a> of the Comanche Nation and Santa Clara Pueblo. She\u2019s a retired archaeologist.<a href=\"https:\/\/crowcanyon.org\/people\/banteah-reyna\/\" id=\"link-76cf43ef3f3b29f43037e7f2271e8b1b\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Reyna Banteah<\/a> of the Pueblo Zuni in New Mexico. She founded Ts\u2019uyya Farm, which practices sustainable farming \u201crooted in Pueblo traditions,\u201d according to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.tsuyyafarm.com\/about\" id=\"link-ea48cdda491c96ae9d4d8f884dde85f4\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">its website<\/a>.<a href=\"https:\/\/crowcanyon.org\/people\/thompson-kathryn\/\" id=\"link-a9139ac09c24c5a7dfab937605c57034\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Kate Thompson<\/a>, Crow Canyon\u2019s cultural explorations program manager.<\/div>\n<p>\u201cThis is not just a retreat,\u201d Thompson said. \u201cIt\u2019s a deep dive into traditional food systems and the ethics of foraging, gathering and preparing food in ways that sustain both the land and the community.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Sarah Payne, chief outreach officer at Crow Canyon, said, \u201cThis isn\u2019t a lecture-based workshop.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s relational, participatory and rooted in respect for Indigenous leadership.
