(Eric Morrow\/Special to the Tri-City Record)<\/span><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<\/p>\n<p>Chess players from New Mexico and Colorado converged on Farmington for the Four Corners Open on June 28 and June 29, 32<\/p>\n<p>Former New Mexico State Champion Dennis Dyer of Albuquerque won the Open Section, and Durango High School student Olin Halsband won the division for less-experienced players.<\/p>\n<p><figure class=\"wp-block-image naviga-inline-image\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/imengine.public.prod.dur.navigacloud.com\/?uuid=6cc3cc3a-a0a1-56f5-9c27-8b1e3bb1ffd6&amp;function=cover&amp;type=preview&amp;source=false&amp;width=2000\" width=\"1649\" height=\"1152\" alt=\"Jack Maynes of Durango and Preston Herrington of Farmington tied for second place. (Eric Morrow\/Special to the Tri-City Record)<\/span><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<\/p><p>Farmington\u2019s Preston Herrington tied for second place in the Open Section with Jack Maynes of Durango, Oscar Iglesias of Albuquerque and Charles Long of Albuquerque.<\/p>\n<p>In the final round, Dyer and Maynes played for first place. It was a fight until the end, when Maynes was forced to play his last 10 moves with a handful of seconds remaining on his clock. Dyer exploited Maynes inaccuracies at the end and won the game and tournament.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis tournament,\u201d said Herrington, \u201cwas a nice opportunity to further the friendly rivalry between the Farmington and Durango chess clubs.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The Farmington chess club meets on Tuesday evenings in the foyer next to the San Juan College library. The Durango chess club meets on Monday evenings at the Guild  House Games in downtown Durango.<\/p>\n<p>*The email with just the one photos shows Jack Maynes in black closer to camera.
