{"id":21474,"date":"2025-07-11T23:11:34","date_gmt":"2025-07-12T05:11:34","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/dh.durangoherald.com\/tj\/ultramarathon-runner-dies-participating-in-hardrock-100\/"},"modified":"2026-03-30T22:06:51","modified_gmt":"2026-03-31T04:06:51","slug":"ultramarathon-runner-dies-participating-in-hardrock-100","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/dh.durangoherald.com\/tj\/ultramarathon-runner-dies-participating-in-hardrock-100\/","title":{"rendered":"Ultramarathon runner dies participating in Hardrock 100"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>A 60-year-old Michigan woman died Friday four hours into the Hardrock 100, a 100-mile run through the San Juan Mountains.<\/p>\n<p>Elaine Stypula of Farmington Hills, Michigan, was pronounced dead by the San Juan County (Colorado) Coroner\u2019s office at 10:27 a.m. Friday. The ultramarathon, involving 146 participants and <a href=\"https:\/\/hardrock100-2025.maprogress.com\/\" id=\"link-6fd49505ebcea4d764775bce1f205c3c\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">spanning mountainous terrain in San Juan County<\/a>, began at 6 a.m. Friday.<\/p>\n<p>According to the San Juan County Office of Emergency Management, the Silverton Medical Rescue Team and the San Juan County Sheriff\u2019s Office received a search and rescue call from Hardrock 100 Safety Sweep Team members at 9:02 a.m. for a CPR in progress near Little Giant Basin. The Silverton Medical Rescue Team hiked a quarter-mile up a \u201csteep, rugged, remote trail,\u201d and once there performed resuscitation efforts on the patient, according to the Office of Emergency Management.<\/p>\n<p>Stypula\u2019s last known location, according to her race tracker, was 6.3 miles into the trail and approximately 3 miles from the nearest aid station.<\/p>\n<p><figure class=\"wp-block-image naviga-inline-image\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/imengine.public.prod.dur.navigacloud.com\/?uuid=5b522606-0a53-579d-9577-5c0065d97b8a&amp;function=cover&amp;type=preview&amp;source=false&amp;width=2000\" width=\"2000\" height=\"1516\" alt=\"The Hardrock 100 racecourse map. (Jerry McBride\/Durango Herald)<\/span><span class=\"credit\">Jerry McBride<\/span><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<\/p><p>\u201cWe are deeply saddened to share that a beloved member of our Hardrock Hundred Mile Endurance Run family has passed away during this year\u2019s event,\u201d said representatives of the Hardrock 100 event on its website and social media accounts. \u201cOur hearts are with their family, friends, and fellow runners as we grieve this tremendous loss.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Stypula was an accomplished trail runner with <a href=\"https:\/\/itra.run\/api\/RunnerSpace\/GetRunnerSpace?memberString=qPd%2BaHxOsjjt4OtN4i0AMQ%3D%3D\" id=\"link-50bf87a739dfd7fc0fc06fc74daa3e90\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">over 50 race completions<\/a> and 1,337:05:38 hours of total race time on her record.<\/p>\n<p>She participated in the Hardrock 100 once before in 2018, completing just over 45 hours of race time before dropping out at the 91.2-mile aid station.<\/p>\n<p>The Hardrock 100 route includes 66,394 feet total of elevation change.
