The Allied invasion of Normandy in 1944 into German-occupied France is considered a strategic masterpiece. It began with a complex deception plan, which included code breaking and spies. The logistical planning and execution exploited German vulnerabilities. It involved coordinating a historic-sized invasion.<\/p>\n

White\u2019s logistical plan to load up on black\u2019s kingside at the expense of a pawn has resulted in this week\u2019s position. It is now time to execute that plan. Like the Allies, white will offer more blood and guts to exploit black\u2019s vulnerable kingside. With this hint, please try to find white\u2019s best move and plan.<\/p>\n

White\u2019s light-squared bishop has its foot on black\u2019s chest. If black\u2019s h6 pawn were removed, white\u2019s queen would mate on h7 with the support of its bishop. This positional truth allows white\u2019s dark-squared bishop to crash the position and capture black\u2019s h6 pawn.<\/p>\n

Black must take the bishop with its pawn. Otherwise, black\u2019s bishop captures the pawn on g7 and black cannot avoid mate on either h8 or h7. White now brings reinforcements to e1 with its a1 rook (see next diagram).<\/p>\n

From here, the computer says the best moves for black are to allow its queen to be exchanged for white\u2019s rook or other material sacrifices to delay losing. For example, the natural queen retreat to d6 is met with white\u2019s queen taking the h6 pawn. Black is forced to defend against mate on h7 with rook to f7.<\/p>\n

White lifts its f1 rook to f4. It is preparing to attack from the \u201cg\u201d and \u201ch\u201d files. Black\u2019s belly and throat are about to be as bloody as Omaha Beach (see next diagram).<\/p>\n

Unlike chess, of course, the blood on Omaha Beach was real. Sometimes the beauty of chess is that no one dies.<\/p>\n
