{"id":17004,"date":"2025-08-05T22:31:56","date_gmt":"2025-08-06T04:31:56","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/dh.durangoherald.com\/tj\/autopsy-wilkerson-was-shot-four-times-by-u-s-marshals-in-farmington\/"},"modified":"2026-03-30T22:03:35","modified_gmt":"2026-03-31T04:03:35","slug":"autopsy-wilkerson-was-shot-four-times-by-u-s-marshals-in-farmington","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/dh.durangoherald.com\/tj\/autopsy-wilkerson-was-shot-four-times-by-u-s-marshals-in-farmington\/","title":{"rendered":"Autopsy: Wilkerson was shot four times by U.S. marshals in Farmington"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p><figure class=\"wp-block-image naviga-inline-image\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/imengine.public.prod.dur.navigacloud.com\/?uuid=61b9f572-fe03-58fc-b61c-816925466a97&amp;function=cover&amp;type=preview&amp;source=false&amp;width=2000\" width=\"1178\" height=\"858\" alt=\"Bree Wilkerson, 25, of Farmington, was shot and killed May 7 by U.S. marshals near the intersection of Hubbard Road and Copper Avenue.\" class=\"naviga-image\" loading=\"lazy\"><figcaption><span class=\"caption\">Bree Wilkerson, 25, of Farmington, was shot and killed May 7 by U.S. marshals near the intersection of Hubbard Road and Copper Avenue.<\/span><span class=\"credit\">cca<\/span><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<\/p><p>Breanna Wilkerson, a 25-year-old woman with no criminal record, was fatally shot by U.S. marshals during a warrant operation in Farmington on May 7 in a case that has been ruled a homicide, according to an autopsy report obtained by the<em id=\"emphasis-ef51a1dcec9ceb2ca7ca53089021a8d6\"> Tri-City Record<\/em> through a public records request.<\/p>\n<p>Marshals were attempting to serve a warrant on Brandon Roe, 37, who also was killed during the shooting.<\/p>\n<p>Roe, who was wanted on local warrants for failure to appear and failure to comply on fourth-degree felony charges, was a passenger in the gold Chevrolet Blazer that Wilkerson was driving when she was shot by \u201claw enforcement,\u201d the report states.<\/p>\n<p><figure class=\"wp-block-image naviga-inline-image naviga-align-left alignleft\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/imengine.public.prod.dur.navigacloud.com\/?uuid=1f21cca6-169a-5ba0-a0f1-230e54effdcf&amp;function=cover&amp;type=preview&amp;source=false&amp;width=2000\" width=\"640\" height=\"653\" alt=\"Brandon Roe\" class=\"naviga-image\" loading=\"lazy\"><figcaption><span class=\"caption\">Brandon Roe<\/span><span class=\"credit\">cca<\/span><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<\/p>\n<p>The Office of the Medical Investigator report states that Wilkerson was pronounced dead at 10:10 p.m. May 7, and the manner of death was ruled a homicide, which simply means the killing of one person by another.<\/p>\n<p>The cause of death was gunshot wounds about 6:30 p.m. that day.<\/p>\n<p>One shot entered the right side of her neck \u201cbehind and lower to the right ear\u201d and struck her cervical spine, the base of her skull and the left maxilla (jaw), causing multiple \u201cskull fractures,\u201d the report states. The bullet was not recovered, according to the report.<\/p>\n<p>A second bullet entered the \u201ccentral mid-back\u201dand struck the thoracic spine and right lung, the report states. The bullet was recovered and was described as a \u201cdeformed jacketed projectile\u201d that weighed \u201c64.0 grains,\u201d the report says.<\/p>\n<p>A third bullet hit the left clavicle and exited the right upper back. The bullet was not recovered.<\/p>\n<p>A fourth bullet entered the \u201canterior mid-right arm.\u201d It was not recovered.<\/p>\n<p><em id=\"emphasis-5349b17aebe0c565604ef426c3b75023\">The Tri-City Record<\/em> has not yet received the autopsy report for Roe.<\/p>\n<p>At least three deputies from the U.S. Marshals Service were involved in the shooting. They were identified in a San Juan County Sheriff\u2019s Office summary of the shooting as Jared Santesson, Mike Coconis and Navid Babadi.<\/p>\n<div class=\"naviga-element naviga-x-im-unordered-list\">The marshal believed to be Babadi said he fired his weapon at least four times.<\/div>\n<div class=\"naviga-element naviga-x-im-unordered-list\">The marshal believed to be Coconis said he fired his weapon twice.<\/div>\n<div class=\"naviga-element naviga-x-im-unordered-list\">The marshal believed to be Santesson said he fired his weapon four times.<\/div>\n<p>At least seven officers from San Juan County Sheriff\u2019s Office were at the scene, according to a document provided to the <em id=\"emphasis-df86878ba4db91cff888bd3e0e11dd00\">Tri-City Record <\/em>by the San Juan County Sheriff\u2019s Office through a public records request.<\/p>\n<div class=\"naviga-element naviga-x-im-unordered-list\">Three are cross-deputized with the U.S. Marshals Service \u2013 Detectives C. Price, N. Adegite and A. Washburn.The other three have \u201cpending\u201d cross-commissions with the Marshals Service \u2013 Sgt. G. Mauldin and Detectives G. Salazar and G. Stow.<\/div>\n<p>In the marshals\u2019 statements and in the Sheriff\u2019s Office summary, officers alluded to possible firearms in a vehicle believed to have been driven by Roe.<\/p>\n<p>Babadi said a black Mercury Mariner was left with \u201ca brown in color pistol holster on the rear floorboard of the vehicle\u201d earlier that day. He also said a \u201cFarmington Police officer observed an AK-47 rifle in the front passenger seat of the black Mercury Mariner.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Farmington Police discovered an incident report that appears similar to this statement, but the incident happened at 1:46 a.m. April 16 at a home in the 4000 block of Copper Avenue.<\/p>\n<p>In the report, police said there was a \u201cCode 20,\u201d which means suspicious vehicle \u201con private property,\u201d and that it might be stolen.<\/p>\n<p>The report states that a \u201cmale named BD was working on the car and ran inside,\u201d and the \u201cmale ditched a rifle.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Farmington Police spokeswoman Shanice Gonzales said it was an \u201cM4-style firearm\u201d inside of the vehicle on private property, and \u201cas there was no legal basis to seize the firearm at that time, it remained in place.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Gonzales also states that police were \u201cunable to confirm\u201d to the identity of the fleeing subject, because of \u201cconflicting information\u201d that was \u201cprovided by individuals on scene.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The investigation of the shooting reported finding no gun in Wilkerson\u2019s Blazer.<\/p>\n<p>According to the U.S. Department of Justice policy on use of force, updated in January, deadly force may not be used \u201csolely to prevent escape\u201d or \u201csolely to disable moving vehicles.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The policy states that an officer may fire into a moving vehicle only if the person inside is threatening death or serious injury through means other than the vehicle itself.
