He is on probation and has been arrested 16 times on a number of felony and misdemeanor charges that include battery on a peace officer, battery on a health care worker, burglary, armed robbery, drug crimes and DWI.<\/p>\n<p>Begay was sentenced by Magistrate Mark Hawkinson on June 28, 2023, to 1,840 days of supervised probation, which would expire June 21, 2028.<\/p>\n<p>Since that time, Begay has been arrested and released at least five times, according to district and magistrate court records.<\/p>\n<p>Begay\u2019s most recent arrest was Aug. 21. He originally was charged with assault upon a school employee and unlawful shooting threats, both misdemeanors, as well as disorderly conduct and interference with members of staff or the general public, both petty misdemeanors.<\/p>\n<p>Upon his arrest, he told Farmington Police officers \u201cI\u2019m gonna get out in the morning anyway.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The <em id=\"emphasis-30f24dad5a8a9f79fefa5229b30eadcd\">Tri-City Record<\/em> contacted the San Juan County District Attorney\u2019s officer regarding Begay\u2019s criminal history and the charges, after discovering in court records that the man was set to be released on his own recognizance.<\/p>\n<p>Chief Deputy District Attorney Brian Decker worked with the Farmington Police Department to amend the criminal complaint and charge Begay with a felony.<\/p>\n<p>Making threats of shooting at a school became a crime that could be charged as a felony charge on July 1 in New Mexico.<\/p>\n<p>Farmington Police Chief Steve Hebbe said all Farmington officers have been made aware of the change from a misdemeanor to a felony charge for threats of shooting at a school, and more training will be forthcoming in the department.<\/p>\n<p>In this case, Farmington Police reportedly have video of Begay saying to a fifth-grade teacher \u201cYou are lucky I don\u2019t have a gun or I\u2019d f\u2014king put you down,\u201d according to the statement of probable cause.<\/p>\n<p>Begay also reportedly was attempting to break car windows in the school parking lot and attempted to gain access to the school building, claiming his \u201cnephew\u201d attended school at McKinley, according to the statement of probable cause.<\/p>\n<p>The incident began at 9:10 a.m. when Begay reportedly became \u201cupset with a vehicle that pulled into the school. He also was deemed as \u201cvery drunk,\u201d according to witness statements.<\/p>\n<p>Witnesses and police reportedly heard him scream obscenities, while children were being dropped off at the school, which was put on immediate lock down, because Begay allegedly threatened to shoot the teacher, court records state.<\/p>\n<p>The fifth-grade teacher also told police that Begay \u201clunged\u201d at him, court records state.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo weapons were located\u201d on Begay, according to a news release from the Farmington Police Department.<\/p>\n<p>However, because of the threat of violence, the felony charge and Begay\u2019s criminal history, the DA filed a motion for a pretrial detention hold.<\/p>\n<p>Other crimes of violence to which Begay has been charged include which consists threatening a convenience store clerk with a broken glass bottle, striking a man in the head with a rock and spitting in a police officer\u2019s eye.<\/p>\n<p>Begay\u2019s case has been transferred to the 11th Judicial District Court, where a motion\u2019s hearing on pretrial hold, as well as a preliminary hearing will be scheduled.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Jr. released one day after arrest<\/p>\n","protected":false},"author":1,"featured_media":16808,"comment_status":"open","ping_status":"open","sticky":false,"template":"","format":"standard","meta":{"_acf_changed":false,"footnotes":""},"categories":[],"tags":[28,29],"naviga_topic":[],"class_list":["post-16807","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","hentry","tag-headlines","tag-newsletter"],"acf":[],"author_name":"dh_admin","_links":{"self":[{"href":"https:\/\/dh.durangoherald.com\/tj\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts\/16807","targetHints":{"allow":["GET"]}}],"collection":[{"href":"https:\/\/dh.durangoherald.com\/tj\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts"}],"about":[{"href":"https:\/\/dh.durangoherald.com\/tj\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/types\/post"}],"author":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/dh.durangoherald.com\/tj\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/users\/1"}],"replies":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/dh.durangoherald.com\/tj\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/comments?post=16807"}],"version-history":[{"count":2,"href":"https:\/\/dh.durangoherald.com\/tj\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts\/16807\/revisions"}],"predecessor-version":[{"id":20403,"href":"https:\/\/dh.durangoherald.com\/tj\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts\/16807\/revisions\/20403"}],"wp:featuredmedia":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/dh.durangoherald.com\/tj\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/media\/16808"}],"wp:attachment":[{"href":"https:\/\/dh.durangoherald.com\/tj\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/media?parent=16807"}],"wp:term":[{"taxonomy":"category","embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/dh.durangoherald.com\/tj\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/categories?post=16807"},{"taxonomy":"post_tag","embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/dh.durangoherald.com\/tj\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/tags?post=16807"},{"taxonomy":"naviga_topic","embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/dh.durangoherald.com\/tj\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/naviga_topic?post=16807"}],"curies":[{"name":"wp","href":"https:\/\/api.w.org\/{rel}","templated":true}]}}
