(Jerry McBride/Durango Herald)Jerry McBride

The Fort Lewis College men’s soccer team has been a second-half squad so far this year. Thursday’s game against St. Edward’s University was another example of that.

FLC’s offensive hit its stride in the second half, scoring three goals to tie St. Edward’s 3-3 and stay undefeated.

The Skyhawks moved to 1-0-1 overall while St. Edward’s moved to 1-0-2 overall after the tie.

Both teams finished with 20 shots with FLC having a 9-8 edge in shots on goal. The Skyhawks had a 9-2 advantage on corner kicks, while St. Edward’s was called for six fouls compared to 13 for FLC.

Neither team could get anything on the scoreboard in the first half, with St. Edward’s having a 10-7 shot advantage as the teams started the second half tied 0-0.

Filip Adamski put the Hilltoppers up 1-0 less than a minute into the second half. FLC French freshman forward Yohann Fila scored his first goal of the season in the 54th minute to tie the game at 1-1. Skyhawks freshman Francisco Pinto had the shot which Hilltoppers goalkeeper Angel Ramirez saved, but couldn’t control. Fila was there for the putback.

Shunji Watanabe gave St. Edward’s a 2-1 lead in the 62nd minute, before FLC was hit with a tough blow in the 74th minute. Junior midfielder Frank Castro picked up his second yellow card, which means he was sent off and FLC had to play the remaining 16 minutes down a man to St. Edward’s.

Playing down a man didn’t stop FLC’s offense and Fila, who scored in the 77th minute to tie the game 2-2. Fellow freshman Alessio Andreottola gave FLC a 3-2 lead two minutes later. Andreottola had a beautiful strike from about 30 yards out that landed just under the crossbar and in the top of the net.

St. Edward’s had the response with its man advantage. Adamski scored in the 86th minute off a header for the 3-3 equalizer.

The No. 9 Skyhawks played at Division II’s No. 17 team in St. Mary’s University on Saturday at 3 p.m. The result wasn’t available at press time.

Women’s soccer dominates Eastern New Mexico to remain unbeaten

The FLC women’s soccer team showed its depth on offense on Thursday at home against Eastern New Mexico. Three Skyhawks scored off the bench as FLC dominated Eastern New Mexico 5-0 to remain undefeated.

“The team that we beat was a team that we should beat,” FLC head coach Damian Clarke said. “Scoring five goals is always a good feeling for the group and having an opportunity to practice scoring goals in games doesn’t come by that often so it was good.”

FLC moved to 2-0-1 overall with the win while Eastern New Mexico dropped to 0-2 overall with the loss.

There were wet and slippery conditions in Durango on Thursday, which made it tough to be on the ball. However, Clarke still thought the team could’ve done a better job and more comfortable on the ball.

Senior forward Anna Tucker opened up the scoring for the Skyhawks in the 25th minute. Junior forward Abila Tapia added to the lead off the bench in the 38th minute and FLC took that 2-0 lead into half.

Tapia resumed the scoring in the 52nd minute. The Skyhawks then had two first-time goal scorers in redshirt freshman Kiana Jamerson in the 60th minute and Isla Witham in the 66th minute.

FLC played at home on Saturday against Lubbock Christian University. Results were unavailable at press time.

bkelly@durangoherald.com

[992,28,991,845,346,1805

post-16548","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","hentry","tag-college-sports","tag-headlines","tag-mens-college-sports","tag-soccer","tag-sports","tag-womens-college-sports
["GET
