(Elizabeth Pond\/Durango Herald)<\/span><span class=\"credit\">cca<\/span><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<\/p><p>West Slope Startup Week is all about supporting the \u201clittle engine that could\u201d stories, said Margaret Hedderman, director of content and brand strategy for the event; WSSW attendee and local small business owner Wendy Malarsie, who runs online jewelry shop <a href=\"https:\/\/www.fabulouslyfunky.com\/\" id=\"link-0ecba6ad9ce03af8cfed3eb801cfb385\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Fabulously Funky<\/a>, exemplified that sentiment on day one.<\/p>\n<p>When Malarsie heard that Startup Week speaker Rachel Crawford liked the hand painted sunflower earrings she was wearing, made by Malarsie, she took them off and gave them to Crawford in an organic representation of the business-based values and connection organizers say the week aims to promote.<\/p>\n<p>Crawford will be leading a <a href=\"https:\/\/whova.com\/embedded\/speaker\/qtPF6CJAc3vYp5cYEt0zYj9DrkN49lnAM1vc61ZfdOc%3D\/48409721\/\" id=\"link-fa9210bfd5beedda0c8fb30f87236990\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Mentorship &amp; Community Support<\/a> presentation at 10:15 a.m. Wednesday at the Main Mall Atrium.<\/p>\n<p>Malarsie said she\u2019s attending West Slope Startup Week not only to make connections through moments like the one with Crawford, but also to sell her wares at this week\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/whova.com\/embedded\/session\/qtPF6CJAc3vYp5cYEt0zYj9DrkN49lnAM1vc61ZfdOc%3D\/4708264\/?widget=primary\" id=\"link-b24240b864b23d1263bbc6e76b9fadd1\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Night Market<\/a> at the Powerhouse science center and benefit from the free business-focused programming offered throughout the week.<\/p>\n<p>Malarsie founded Fabulously Funky during the COVID-19 pandemic, and has been operating online and through sales at festivals and markets since.
