{"id":16143,"date":"2025-10-14T00:46:38","date_gmt":"2025-10-14T06:46:38","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/dh.durangoherald.com\/tj\/man-who-shot-killed-two-women-in-west-durango-dies-from-self-inflicted-injuries-police-say\/"},"modified":"2026-03-30T21:55:05","modified_gmt":"2026-03-31T03:55:05","slug":"man-who-shot-killed-two-women-in-west-durango-dies-from-self-inflicted-injuries-police-say","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/dh.durangoherald.com\/tj\/man-who-shot-killed-two-women-in-west-durango-dies-from-self-inflicted-injuries-police-say\/","title":{"rendered":"Man who shot, killed two women in west Durango dies from self-inflicted injuries, police say"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p><figure class=\"wp-block-image naviga-inline-image\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/imengine.public.prod.dur.navigacloud.com\/?uuid=142e6ab8-5ed1-558b-9c6d-bc2ffad92ef0&amp;function=cover&amp;type=preview&amp;source=false&amp;width=2000\" width=\"733\" height=\"485\" alt=\"Emma Sims, left, and Shelby Campbell\" class=\"naviga-image\" loading=\"lazy\"><figcaption><span class=\"caption\">Emma Sims, left, and Shelby Campbell<\/span><span class=\"credit\">cca<\/span><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<\/p><p>The man who shot two women before turning the gun on himself last week in west Durango has died from his injuries, the Durango Police Department announced Monday in a social media post.<\/p>\n<p>Bradley Campbell, 32, is suspected of shooting and killing his estranged wife, Shelby Campbell, and her friend Emma Sims at about 7 p.m. Oct. 7 in the Apache Mobile Home Park in west Durango, police said.<\/p>\n<p>All three were taken to various hospitals in critical condition.<\/p>\n<p>Police said the two women died last week, and Bradley Campbell died Monday.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDetectives have continued to investigate this incident and have determined there is no indication that anyone else was involved,\u201d Durango Police Department wrote in a news release Monday.<\/p>\n<p>Shelby Campbell and Emma Sims, both 32, were well known in Durango\u2019s stand-up comedy scene, said Jason Balmforth, a local comedian and friend.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cShelby and Emma were probably two of the most important people in my life,\u201d Balmforth said. \u201cEmma was colloquially known as \u2018the god-queen of Durango comedy.\u2019 And then Shelby took over comedy for her (when Sims moved away). We all would go to open mics and shows, laugh at life, laugh at the world and laugh at each other.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Balmforth said both women were kind and generous to everyone they met.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThey were two small girls that had big hearts,\u201d he said. \u201cThey just carried the world on their shoulders with just how generous and kind they were for everyone around them.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Shelby Campbell worked at Beads and Beyond since 2014, according to shop owner Nancy Juliana, who described her as extraordinary woman filled with \u201cjoy, positivity and a desire to help others.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201c(Campbell) was an integral part of our family at the store,\u201d Juliana wrote in a statement to <em id=\"emphasis-5585f034f718db920b85aeaa3276a06d\">The Durango Herald.<\/em> \u201cShe made people feel special because she remembered them, knew their names, stories and genuinely cared about them as individuals.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Christopher Hernandez said he met both women through Starlight Lounge\u2019s stand-up open mic night. He described Sims as a vibrant individual who loved art and connecting with people.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cEmma was a wonderful person,\u201d he wrote. \u201cShe was the best kind of friend who would do anything within her power for her friends. She was always full of smiles and energy, loved karaoke nights, had been a local stand-up comic, had recently self-published a short story and loved to paint. Her hair color was ever-changing, always vibrant and masterfully done.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Hernandez said Sims moved to Taos, New Mexico, but visited friends in Durango whenever she could. She loved cooking for friends, regularly hosted game nights and often changed the menu depending on who was coming. Sims had been working her way through culinary school, he said.<\/p>\n<p>Patrick Montine, another friend of Sims, said he met her on a date.
