(Benjamin Rubin\/The Journal)<\/span><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<\/p>\n<p>Gerald \u201cJerry\u201d Whited has announced his candidacy for the Montezuma County Board of County Commissioners.<\/p>\n<p>Whited has worked with the Ute Mountain Ute Tribe for 14 years, including recent years as public safety director. He says proper county funding, water sustainability, positive tribal relations and public safety are his priorities if elected commissioner.<\/p>\n<p>He added that he wants to promote dialogue and unity during polarizing times.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIf I get elected as commissioner, I\u2019d like to be able to cross those bridges and say, \u2018Hey, we\u2019re here for everyone and we got to make the county better for everybody.\u2019\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Whited, who shared his candidacy at the Montezuma County Republicans meeting Thursday, joins three other candidates for the District 1 seat: Brett Likes, Bonnie Anderson and Diane Fox-Spratlen.<\/p>\n<p>Along with the other candidates, Whited is a registered Republican, voting records of the county show.<\/p>\n<p>The commissioner role Whited seeks is now held by Jim Candelaria, whose two-term limit ends in November 2026. He was <a href=\"https:\/\/www.the-journal.com\/articles\/candelaria-wins-tight-race-for-montezuma-county-commissioner\/\" id=\"link-7f2935f8fefca5cdb4d24e5c64ffaea4\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">elected in 2018<\/a>, and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.the-journal.com\/articles\/candelaria-holds-on-to-win-montezuma-county-commissioners-race\/\" id=\"link-eb8db50b0b8648dcc65f4987b9a67d77\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">reelected in 2022<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>The other two commissioners remain in office.<\/p>\n<p>District 2 Commissioner Kent Lindsay was <a href=\"https:\/\/www.the-journal.com\/articles\/montezuma-county-commissioner-kent-lindsay-re-elected\/\" id=\"link-31e5f3604b41955e37cae60930242cef\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">reelected in 2024<\/a> after a 2020 term, having served from 1997 to 2005. District 3 Commissioner Gerald Koppenhafer was <a href=\"https:\/\/www.the-journal.com\/articles\/montezuma-county-commissioner-gerald-koppenhafer-re-elected\/\" id=\"link-f5c7222fdf8741d4b5f1773737762428\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">elected in 2024<\/a> after serving two terms from 2004 to 2012.<\/p>\n<div class=\"naviga-element naviga-subheadline1\">Putting public safety first<\/div>\n<p>Throughout his career in various public safety roles, Whited has been both a firefighter and paramedic. He\u2019s an emergency manager and sits on the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.swhealth.org\/about-us\/boards\/montezuma-county-hospital-district\/\" id=\"link-d424cc5a12634d93782e5037a3c8a1f1\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">board of the Montezuma County Hospital District<\/a>. He\u2019s also been on the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.durangoherald.com\/articles\/dolores-hires-attorney-seeks-town-manager\/\" id=\"link-dab4a507cf8cee68fff83c142ab20065\" target=\"_blank\">Dolores Planning and Zoning Board<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe knows his politics, he knows how to manage a budget and he knows how to lead,\u201d said Scott Anderson, another MCHD board member as well as a longtime firefighter and emergency manager for the county and the Ute Mountain Ute Tribe.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAs a paramedic and first responder, he\u2019s able to take charge of a scene,\u201d Anderson said. \u201cHe\u2019s very well known in the community. He can\u2019t go shopping in Walmart without people saying, \u2018Hi, Jerry.\u2019\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Whited said he moved to Montezuma County about 14 years ago and advanced through public safety roles with the Ute Mountain Ute Tribe during that time.<\/p>\n<p>Opening up more intergovernmental dialogue with the tribe is a priority, he said.<\/p>\n<p>A concerning trend of public safety issues facing the county prompted his run, including detention center challenges, mental health concerns and funding disputes between the sheriff\u2019s office and commissioners, he said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhether it\u2019s tourism or people moving here, if people don\u2019t feel safe here, people don\u2019t come here.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Whited said he\u2019d like to encourage other funding sources, including revisiting a countywide public safety sales tax.<\/p>\n<p>Property owners alone, especially ranchers and farmers, shouldn\u2019t foot the bill for county services, he said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThey can\u2019t be handcuffed anymore by just being taxed and taxed and taxed.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Tourism dollars could also help fund a countywide sales tax, especially if visitors use local services, he said.<\/p>\n<p><figure class=\"wp-block-image naviga-inline-image naviga-align-left alignleft\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/imengine.public.prod.dur.navigacloud.com\/?uuid=2ae068ac-1d67-56b4-adfa-0f9c54e241b9&amp;function=cover&amp;type=preview&amp;source=false&amp;width=2000\" width=\"675\" height=\"1200\" alt=\"Gerald \u201cJerry\u201d Whited has announced his candidacy for the Montezuma County Board of County Commissioners. (Journal file photo)<\/span><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<\/p><p>Advocating at the state and federal level for water security is another priority, he said.<\/p>\n<p>In the past, Whited ran as a candidate for <a href=\"https:\/\/www.the-journal.com\/articles\/dolores-school-board-race-gets-competitive\/\" id=\"link-16158186dfe6b10efdd3e2624ff8eed3\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">the Dolores School Board<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.the-journal.com\/articles\/dolores-town-board-appoints-two-new-board-members\/\" id=\"link-0f1c80350a4cf3bfffba866a46e5a079\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">the Dolores Board of Trustees<\/a> and as Dolores Mayor.<\/p>\n<p>Whited said his desire to run for the commissioner seat stems from neighborly values.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI miss when a handshake and your word meant something,\u201d he said. \u201cIt shouldn\u2019t matter; you just help your neighbor.
