Driver accused of drunken driving faces homicide charge<\/div>\n

A woman who was killed Dec. 21 by an allegedly intoxicated driver has been identified by the San Juan County Sheriff\u2019s Office.<\/p>\n

Conny Jack, 20, was walking in a far-right lane of westbound traffic at 4:46 a.m. in the 5600 block of U.S. Highway 64 when she was struck and killed by a white 2016 Kia Sorento reportedly driven by Jose Alexander Orozco Obando, according to the crash report from the San Juan County Sheriff\u2019s Office.<\/p>\n

Orozco Obando, 31, a resident of Nicaragua, was charged with second-degree felony homicide by vehicle while driving drunk, according to court records.<\/p>\n

Orozco Obando and his passenger, Karina Hernandez-Rios, 36, were traveling in the lane where Jack was walking, and both told investigators they did not see the young woman, according to the crash report.<\/p>\n

Sheriff\u2019s Cpl. Eric Burke wrote in the report that he could \u201csmell a strong odor of alcohol\u201d on both Orozco Obando and Hernandez-Rios, who reportedly admitted the two had been drinking earlier at No Worries Sports Bar and Grill at the Four Corners Regional Airport.<\/p>\n

Burke also found a case of Corona with broken beer bottles on the roadside near the vehicle and footprints matching those of Hernandez-Rios near the bottles, the report states.<\/p>\n

Hernandez-Rios was charged with third-degree felony tampering with evidence for reportedly trying to dispose of the bottle, which had been in the Kia, the report states.<\/p>\n

Orozco Obando and Hernandez-Rios were arrested and booked into the San Juan County Detention Center Dec. 21, and both were released the next day.<\/p>\n

A preliminary hearing set for Dec. 30 was continued at the request of the San Juan County District Attorney\u2019s Office.<\/p>\n

Senior trial prosecutor Ronald Colquitt was out of town on administrative leave for the holiday, according to the motion for continuance.<\/p>\n

Hernandez-Rios\u2019 preliminary hearing has been rescheduled for 8:30 a.m. Jan. 15 in San Juan County Magistrate Court.<\/p>\n

Orozco Obando\u2019s preliminary hearing has been rescheduled for 8:30 a.m. Jan. 29 in San Juan County Magistrate Court. He also is facing federal charges of \u201cimproper entry by alien,\u201d according to the San Juan County Detention Center records.<\/p>\n
