In Shakespeare\u2019s play \u201cMacbeth,\u201d Lady Macbeth drugs the king\u2019s guards, allowing General Macbeth to murder King Duncan easily. Similarly, in this week\u2019s position White removes Black\u2019s key defender, which allows White to win material decisively and force the Black king\u2019s abdication. With this hint in mind, please try to find White\u2019s winning combination.<\/p>\n

Black\u2019s knight is holding the fort as it defends its rook on c6. The rook on c6 threatens White\u2019s rook on b6. White can trade rooks on c6 and have an edge with an extra central pawn. However, there would still be miles to go before the game is won, with many chances to go wrong and let Black escape with a draw.<\/p>\n

The winning move is rook takes knight with check.<\/p>\n

This removes the c6 rook\u2019s defender. After Black takes White\u2019s rook on e7, White\u2019s b6 rook takes Black\u2019s c6 rook (see next diagram).<\/p>\n

White is now a full knight ahead, and Black, like King Duncan, will soon be slain.<\/p>\n

The lesson this week: Something wicked may come if a defending piece is neutralized and removed.<\/p>\n
