(Jerry McBride\/Durango Herald)<\/span><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<\/p><p>Old Abe, the steam- and coal-powered tractor that became a staple in parades and events across Southwest Colorado in the 1960s and \u201970s, will be auctioned off this weekend in the estate sale of lifelong Durango resident Jack Newbold.<\/p>\n<p>The steam tractor was built by Jack using an 1898 steam engine found on the edge of a field and a boiler from a laundromat that was going out of business, his son, Keith Newbold, said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBack in the 1960s and \u201970s, he was taking it all around to a lot of mountain communities for the Fourth of July parades, and then he would have it out in Mancos, and Bayfield and different places,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p>The tractor was also a common sight at Durango\u2019s Fiesta Days parade, previously known as the \u201cSpanish Trails Fiesta.\u201d Keith, who is now in his 70s, rode the tractor with his father from as young as age 10. The tractor is being auctioned off during his family\u2019s estate sale today and Saturday in west Durango.<\/span><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<\/p><p>Jack, who became a bit of a celebrity in his own right for his collection of valuable old-timey items, made appearances in Rolling Rock beer commercials in the late-1980s and early 1990s alongside Old Abe, Keith said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201c(Rolling Rock\u2019s) motto at the time was, \u2018We do it the old-fashioned way,\u2019 or something,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p>The tractor has always held monetary value, Keith said \u2013 but Jack was never interested in selling.<\/p>\n<p>A hopeful buyer \u2013 a Case Tractors dealer from Texas \u2013 offered Jack a brand-new Cadillac in 1965 in exchange for Old Abe, Keith said; but Jack declined.<\/p>\n<p>The exact starting bid for the tractor, which will be up for auction Saturday morning, hadn\u2019t been set as of Thursday. (Jerry McBride\/Durango Herald)<\/span><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<\/p><p>\u201cBoth of his older brothers went away to World War II, and one of them was killed in action, and the other one never came back, so he had to step up when he should have been going to school,\u201d Keith said. \u201cHe was happy to take care of the old folks. He was working on stuff like this, figuring it out, since he was a kid. He just had a knack. He just had that \u2018it\u2019 factor.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>A NASA engineer once consulted Jack when he was stuck on an engineering problem, Keith said \u2013 one of many mechanical professionals who would come to Jack for help throughout his life.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe guy literally was a rocket scientist, having problems with an engineering issue, even though that\u2019s what he did, and somebody said, \u2018If anybody can figure it out, Jack Newbold can,\u2019\u201d he said. \u201cHe came up here (to the shop), and my dad said, \u2018Well, what you need to do is this, this and this.\u2019\u201d<\/p>\n<p>When he wasn\u2019t restoring steam engines and antique tractors, Jack was involved in a range of business ventures and jobs over the course of his life. (Jerry McBride\/Durango Herald)<\/span><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<\/p><p>Jack stopped bringing Old Abe to parades and events around 2006, when the state began requiring pricey boiler inspections \u2013 and residents noticed its absence.<\/p>\n<p>\u201c(The tractor) was very well-received by a lot of people,\u201d Keith said. \u201cWhen he stopped running it in parades, people were calling him and saying, \u2018Jack, why isn\u2019t it in the parade anymore?\u2019\u201d<\/p>\n<div class=\"naviga-scoreboard factbox\">\n<h4 class=\"scoreboard-title\">Auction information<\/h4>\n<p>The Newbold Estate Auction is scheduled for 12:03 p.m. Friday and 9:04 a.m. Saturday at 21010 U.S. Highway 160 in Durango. Friday\u2019s auction will feature collectibles and smaller items, and Saturday\u2019s sale will focus on larger items in the shop, including the Old Abe tractor.
