(Jerry McBride\/Durango Herald)<\/span><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<\/p><p>Heightened fire danger heading into summer has firefighters across Southwest Colorado concerned, including about whether water supplies will be sufficient to fight a blaze.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWater supplies are going to be pretty challenged this year based on the lack of snowpack, snowmelt and drought conditions,\u201d said Durango Fire Protection District Chief Randy Black.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/experience.arcgis.com\/experience\/6b13a4d0e90f45a7a2a9030dd2cd8c6e\/page\/Fire-Environment-Update?views=Drought\" id=\"link-e9b6e396da29a6608250b072d4af020f\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">According to the Colorado Division of Prevention and Control\u2019s April 16 drought report<\/a>, more than half the state is already in extreme or exceptional drought \u2013 categorized by large agricultural losses, reduced reservoir levels and heightened wildfire danger.<\/p>\n<p>La Plata County ranged from severe to exceptional drought, the report said. That caused the city of Durango to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.durangoherald.com\/articles\/durango-enacts-lawn-watering-restrictions-fines-for-violations\/\" id=\"link-b3641159425b746434fb46c6864608d5\" target=\"_blank\">issue stage 1 water restrictions<\/a> April 10.<\/p>\n<p>Like Black, Upper Pine River Fire Protection District Chief Bruce Evans is concerned. Evans said during the Palisades and Eaton fires \u2013 which erupted in Los Angeles County in January 2025, <a href=\"https:\/\/34c031f8-c9fd-4018-8c5a-4159cdff6b0d-cdn-endpoint.azureedge.net\/-\/media\/calfire-website\/our-impact\/fire-statistics\/top-20-destructive-ca-wildfires.pdf?rev=102f5a22c40844a8943c95b3c3fa05e7&amp;hash=6BF0E12D3D9D81A0B070FA3574917771\" id=\"link-8298cdbc8e822d591d83a825d2010031\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">killed 28 people and destroyed over 16,000 homes<\/a> \u2013 some fire hydrants being used to battle the blazes ran out of water.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIf you\u2019re a student of the Palisades Fire, one of the things that was routinely reported was that the reservoirs were dry and they ran out of water pretty quickly,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p><figure class=\"wp-block-image naviga-inline-image\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/imengine.public.prod.dur.navigacloud.com\/?uuid=36c8d79f-7aea-5dfb-ae69-7013716aa9d4&amp;function=cover&amp;type=preview&amp;source=false&amp;width=2000\" srcset=\"https:\/\/imengine.public.prod.dur.navigacloud.com\/?uuid=36c8d79f-7aea-5dfb-ae69-7013716aa9d4&amp;function=cover&amp;type=preview&amp;source=false&amp;width=800 800w, https:\/\/imengine.public.prod.dur.navigacloud.com\/?uuid=36c8d79f-7aea-5dfb-ae69-7013716aa9d4&amp;function=cover&amp;type=preview&amp;source=false&amp;width=1200 1200w, https:\/\/imengine.public.prod.dur.navigacloud.com\/?uuid=36c8d79f-7aea-5dfb-ae69-7013716aa9d4&amp;function=cover&amp;type=preview&amp;source=false&amp;width=1800 1800w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 480px) 100vw, (max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 2000px\" width=\"2000\" height=\"1452\" alt=\"Go Time Design LLC uses several different sprinkler heads as part of its home wildfire defense system. (Jerry McBride\/Durango Herald)<\/span><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<\/p><p>Because many La Plata County residents live in the urban-wildland interface \u2013 where communities butt up and into forestland \u2013 the risk of a wildfire destroying large swaths of forests, houses, business and infrastructure is especially potent this year.<\/p>\n<p>The <a href=\"https:\/\/www.durangoherald.com\/articles\/low-snowpack-drought-heighten-fears-of-severe-wildfire\/\" id=\"link-17ee4ab5756ba70652a05ceb047ea002\" target=\"_blank\">best way to reduce that risk<\/a> is to remove flammable vegetation from around a property and retrofitting houses and businesses with more fire-resistant materials when fire danger is low. <a href=\"https:\/\/csfs.colostate.edu\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/04\/2021_CSFS_HIZGuide_Web.pdf\" id=\"link-ceb1f14e50385b5081cc42f95549f062\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">The Colorado State Forest Service\u2019s Home Ignition Zone Guidelines<\/a> detail how best homeowners can mitigate their property.<\/p>\n<p>The fewer structures at heightened risk of burning, the less concern there is about water use. (Jerry McBride\/Durango Herald)<\/span><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<\/p><p>For Andy Glanz \u2013 an industrial designer and former paramedic and EMT \u2013 and his wife and business partner, Stef Glanz, one approach to the problem are rooftop sprinklers. In 2025, the Durango couple started building wildfire sprinkler systems, which they plan to sell through the couple\u2019s company Go Time Designs LLC.<\/p>\n<p>Studies have shown that 90% of structures that burn in a wildfire do so because an ember blowing off the approaching blaze lands on the structure. (Jerry McBride\/Durango Herald)<\/span><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<\/p><p>The sprinklers are linked via hoses to a small pump that is connected to a water supply, which is either a house\u2019s sprinkler spigot, a cistern or a standalone water tank. The idea is to turn it on just before leaving the house in the event of an evacuation.<\/p>\n<p>Evans sees potential in the use of the sprinklers, both for home defense and for conserving water. Where fire engines use hundreds of gallons of water per minute, sprinklers use a fraction of that. The Glanzes\u2019 system, for example, typically put out 6 gallons per minute.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe sprinklers use a couple gallons a minute, versus if we pull up in a fire truck the first two hand lines that come off are going to flow 125 to 150 gallons a minute,\u201d Evans said.<\/p>\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-video wp-block-embed-youtube naviga-video-embed\">\n<div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\"><iframe loading=\"lazy\" width=\"560\" height=\"315\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/21n17fitamU\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/div>\n<\/figure>\n<p>Upper Pine fire has done demonstrations with home wildfire sprinklers, which, according to a <a href=\"youtube.com\/watch?v=21n17fitamU&amp;feature=youtu.be\" id=\"link-bed69c04a3e73d0287f2e3e76ff7e5c8\" target=\"_blank\">YouTube video on the department\u2019s channel<\/a>, are effective at stopping embers when paired with fuel reduction and home hardening.<\/p>\n<p>Additionally, Andy Glanz pointed to how similar systems are already used in Australia, which also has to deal with destructive wildfires.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/research.csiro.au\/bushfire\/new-builds\/sprinklers-and-shutters\/\" id=\"link-fbe0f1f1848f94107c88150cc51af0a3\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">According to a report from the Commonwealth Scientific and Industrial Research Organization<\/a>, Australia\u2019s national science agency, home wildfire sprinkler systems can \u201caid in the survival of buildings (and people) during a bushfire\u201d \u2013 what they call a wildfire in the Land Down Under.<\/p>\n<div class=\"naviga-element naviga-subheadline1\">Sprinklers a double-edged sword<\/div>\n<p><figure class=\"wp-block-image naviga-inline-image\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/imengine.public.prod.dur.navigacloud.com\/?uuid=b261556b-429b-541d-ade1-5067c3a01ad3&amp;function=cover&amp;type=preview&amp;source=false&amp;width=2000\" srcset=\"https:\/\/imengine.public.prod.dur.navigacloud.com\/?uuid=b261556b-429b-541d-ade1-5067c3a01ad3&amp;function=cover&amp;type=preview&amp;source=false&amp;width=800 800w, https:\/\/imengine.public.prod.dur.navigacloud.com\/?uuid=b261556b-429b-541d-ade1-5067c3a01ad3&amp;function=cover&amp;type=preview&amp;source=false&amp;width=1200 1200w, https:\/\/imengine.public.prod.dur.navigacloud.com\/?uuid=b261556b-429b-541d-ade1-5067c3a01ad3&amp;function=cover&amp;type=preview&amp;source=false&amp;width=1800 1800w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 480px) 100vw, (max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 2000px\" width=\"2000\" height=\"1500\" alt=\"Andy and Stef Glanz have a pickup truck with a skid unit mounted to the bed. (Scout Edmondson\/Durango Herald)<\/span><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<\/p><p>But Black said the sprinkler systems are a \u201cdouble-edged sword.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThey can end up using the water that we need to be able to take care of a fire,\u201d Black said. \u201cThey can be helpful, but it can also be a challenge. We find the most success is bringing our own water in to make sure that we\u2019ve got enough water to fight the fire.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>These systems can be expensive. Go Time Design LLC\u2019s can cost about $10,000, though the price can fluctuate based on size of the house and certain components \u2013 like the pump or number of sprinklers \u2013 included in the system, Stef Glanz said.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/ibhs1.wpenginepowered.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/Final-2024-Sprinklers-White-Paper.pdf\" id=\"link-7bc8bb3b2fcfc672393e4560bcf249d6\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">The Insurance Institute for Business and Home Safety<\/a> said wildfire sprinkler systems are promising but still an emerging, unproven technology.<\/p>\n<p>IIBHS said standardized testing and installation regulations must be implemented. Additionally, active wildfire mitigation strategies, like sprinklers, \u201cshould never be used in lieu of passive mitigation strategies\u201d like home hardening and fuel reduction.<\/p>\n<p>But that was never the point of the sprinklers, Andy Glanz said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOf things that people should be doing to prepare, mitigation is first,\u201d Glanz said.<\/p>\n<p>Evans also said having another source of water on one\u2019s property, like a human-made pond, kiddie pool or cistern, can be used by firefighters when responding to a wildfire.<\/p>\n<p>Black said he has a wildfire sprinkler system set up on his home. For instance, Evans said Upper Pine is adopting \u201cskid units\u201d \u2013 tanks and hoses with a 300-gallon capacity that mount to their pickup trucks.<\/p>\n<p>Skid units essentially turn those small trucks into mini fire engines that can quickly respond to fires soon after they break out, and are more maneuverable than a larger engine in wildland settings.
