CENTENNIAL \u2013 Colorado Republicans got their first look at their top four candidates for governor Wednesday in an hourlong television taping that didn\u2019t turn feisty until the final seconds.<\/p>\n
The quartet \u2013 state Sen. Greg Brophy, former congressman Tom Tancredo, Secretary of State Scott Gessler and former state Sen. Mike Kopp \u2013 sang in harmony when the topic was Gov. John Hickenlooper.<\/p>\n
He has \u201cfailed,\u201d Brophy said. He \u201cstands for decline,\u201d Gessler said. He \u201ctakes cues from the East Coast,\u201d Kopp said. He has \u201cdone to Colorado what Obama has done to the nation,\u201d Tancredo said.<\/p>\n
The taping of \u201cThe Aaron Harber Show\u201d was the first joint appearance by the major Republican candidates for governor. Adams County GOP Chairman Steve House entered the race last weekend and was not at Wednesday\u2019s forum. GOP voters will choose one candidate at the party primary in June.<\/p>\n
The four were especially hard on Hickenlooper\u2019s decision to delay indefinitely the execution of Nathan Dunlap, who murdered four people in an Aurora pizza parlor. All four said Colorado\u2019s death penalty does not need to be changed, although Brophy added that it takes to long to carry out.<\/p>\n
They also decried the gun bills Hickenlooper signed, which require background checks for private party sales and limit the size of ammunition magazines. Brophy and Kopp said enforcing current laws will help curb gun violence, while Gessler said the state needs to stop warehousing the mentally ill in prisons.<\/p>\n
Tancredo wants more people to carry guns and learn how to use them.<\/p>\n
\u201cThe reality is, an armed citizenry is a safer citizenry,\u201d Tancredo said.<\/p>\n
Tancredo, who split the GOP vote in 2010 by running for governor on the American Constitution Party ticket, wants all the candidates to sign a pledge to verbally attack only Hickenlooper, not each other. Kopp and Gessler said they would be civil, but they stopped short of signing the pledge.<\/p>\n
Brophy, given the last word, fired the debate\u2019s first shot.<\/p>\n
\u201cIf the congressman wants an easy path to the nomination, he might go talk to the American Constitution Party about that,\u201d Brophy said.<\/p>\n
