{"id":122049,"date":"2014-01-15T04:05:16","date_gmt":"2014-01-15T11:05:16","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/dh.durangoherald.com\/tj\/demons-win-on-2-pins-and-8-forfeits\/"},"modified":"2014-01-15T04:05:16","modified_gmt":"2014-01-15T11:05:16","slug":"demons-win-on-2-pins-and-8-forfeits","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/dh.durangoherald.com\/tj\/demons-win-on-2-pins-and-8-forfeits\/","title":{"rendered":"Demons win on 2 pins and 8 forfeits"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p><!-- gallery:7b090263-d6c2-4699-b9fa-287d6da01260 --><\/p>\n<p>They only got one shot at it, and the Demons made the most of it.<\/p>\n<p>The Durango High School wrestling team defeated Montezuma-Cortez High School 60-16 on Tuesday in its only home match of the season.<\/p>\n<p>DHS benefitted from eight Cortez forfeits in the contest.<\/p>\n<p>Tristan Martinez (106 pounds), Devon Pound (113), Matthew Lavengood (120), Joe Crawford (138), Dillon Anthony (152), Henry Dorr (160), Kyle Duran (170) and Mark Anthony Trujillo (220) all won by forfeit.<\/p>\n<p>Cortez brought in On the Mat\u2019s No. 1-ranked 170-pound wrestler in Seager Oliver, and he wrestled up to 182 pounds to face the Demons\u2019 Patrick Cunnion.<\/p>\n<p>Oliver held an 8-0 lead in the second period and won the match 10-0.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe got to know which level the No. 1 in the state is at, what level he can work toward,\u201d DHS head coach John Gurule said of Cunnion. \u201cIt lets Patrick realize where he can be in the future.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>It was Durango\u2019s turn to have someone wrestle up when it came to the 285-pound match.<\/p>\n<p>Daniel Gustavson moved up from 220 pounds to wrestle Victor Perez.<\/p>\n<p>Gustavson escaped a near pin at the end of the first period, leaving the match tied at four. He pinned Perez with 1 minute, 37 seconds remaining in the second period.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe almost had 30 pounds on me,\u201d said Gustavson, son of Catherine and Dan Gustavson. \u201cI had to get in there and dictate the pace of the match, be quicker and more explosive.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>DHS scored another pin victory at 126 pounds when Hunter Hall took down Josh Ramos with 15 seconds left in the match. Hall held a 15-4 lead after the second period and controlled most of the match.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI was really excited for the home meet,\u201d said Hall, son of Laura and Randy Hall. \u201cThe crowd got me going. I knew from the start that I had that guy beat.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The Panthers scored two pins, as well.<\/p>\n<p>Levi Gross took down Cole Gustavson at 132 pounds with 1:28 remaining in the third quarter, while Justice Ramos pinned Diego Martinez with 1:08 left in the second period of the 145-pound match.<\/p>\n<p>Both teams left the 195-pound weight class open.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhen you don\u2019t have that many matches you can mentally get down a little bit, but the boys came out focused,\u201d Gurule said. \u201cIn the matches that we did have, the boys came out focused, and I\u2019m proud of them.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Gurule organized an alumni event before the match to celebrate previous DHS wrestlers and their accomplishments; Demons from as far back as 1957 attended.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI came into the program as an outsider, and I thought it was important to see where the program was coming from,\u201d Gurule said. \u201cDurango has a rich history, and I thought it was important to recognize that.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>DHS next will wrestle this weekend at the Payson Invitational in Payson, Ariz., a round-robin tournament where the Demons could compete in 10 matches.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThey\u2019ll get a lot of mat time this weekend, which will help us prepare for regionals and eventually state,\u201d Gurule said.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"mailto:kgrabowski@durangoherald.com\">kgrabowski@durangoherald.com<\/a><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>wrestling celebrates alumni in a victory over Montezuma-Cortez<\/p>\n","protected":false},"author":1,"featured_media":122050,"comment_status":"open","ping_status":"open","sticky":false,"template":"","format":"standard","meta":{"_acf_changed":false,"footnotes":""},"categories":[5770],"tags":[592,427,346,1205],"naviga_topic":[],"class_list":["post-122049","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","hentry","category-high-school-sports","tag-durango-high-school","tag-prep-sports","tag-sports","tag-wrestling"],"acf":[],"author_name":"dh_admin","_links":{"self":[{"href":"https:\/\/dh.durangoherald.com\/tj\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts\/122049","targetHints":{"allow":["GET"]}}],"collection":[{"href":"https:\/\/dh.durangoherald.com\/tj\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts"}],"about":[{"href":"https:\/\/dh.durangoherald.com\/tj\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/types\/post"}],"author":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/dh.durangoherald.com\/tj\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/users\/1"}],"replies":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/dh.durangoherald.com\/tj\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/comments?post=122049"}],"version-history":[{"count":0,"href":"https:\/\/dh.durangoherald.com\/tj\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts\/122049\/revisions"}],"wp:featuredmedia":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/dh.durangoherald.com\/tj\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/media\/122050"}],"wp:attachment":[{"href":"https:\/\/dh.durangoherald.com\/tj\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/media?parent=122049"}],"wp:term":[{"taxonomy":"category","embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/dh.durangoherald.com\/tj\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/categories?post=122049"},{"taxonomy":"post_tag","embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/dh.durangoherald.com\/tj\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/tags?post=122049"},{"taxonomy":"naviga_topic","embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/dh.durangoherald.com\/tj\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/naviga_topic?post=122049"}],"curies":[{"name":"wp","href":"https:\/\/api.w.org\/{rel}","templated":true}]}}
