This year, Dolores High School will graduate a class of 36. Eighteen girls and 18 boys will walk down the center aisles to earn their high school diploma. Don’t miss the event of the year, which promises to be a good one, especially since the donation of a giant screen to project photos on. It is always hard to keep your eyes dry when they flash baby pictures of our seniors and then flash to their senior pictures. It really does show us just how fast they grow up. The culminating event of the year starts at 10 a.m. on Saturday, May 24 in the Main Gym.

Pie in the face

The school year has been filled with lots of fun end-of-the-year school events. The favorite, so far, at least for the students, was the reward for earning points on the Accelerated Reader wall. If every student made it on the wall, Principal Sherri Maxwell said she would enter a pie-eating contest and so would the teachers who got the most votes in a pig decorating contest. Well, the results were hilarious, and Brad Finch came out on top wearing his “Pie-Rat” costume. The kids couldn’t stop talking about their teachers stuffing their faces into pies and going hog wild.

A walking wax museum

Another highlight last week at the Dolores Elementary School was the Second-Grade Wax museum. Students dressed up as their favorite figure from history, drew a red button on their hand and held perfectly still, like wax.

When parents and other students came into the room, they pushed the “button” and the student launched into a well-rehearsed paragraph they researched and wrote about that person. Personal favorites were: Albert Einstein, of course, Amelia Earhart, Vincent Van Gogh, Georgia O’Keeffe, George Washington, Mother Teresa, Hellen Keller, Elvis, Princess Diana and so much more. Great job, second grade.

Dramatic performances

Also in the long list of events, Mrs. Bean put on a great musical for the classes and it was well attended. Mrs. Hall put on a great concert at the Middle/High School. In addition, the cast of Who’s Crazy Now? wrapped up their production on Saturday. They performed for the student body on Friday to a packed house.

Sports standouts

Congratulations to the following students who will compete at the state track meet on May 14-16: Brianna Schwartz, Taylor Elder, Olivia Wright, Larissa Umberger, Kelly Charles, Gus Noyes, Regan Umberger, Mikeal Ford, Ruben Gomez, Tristan Holgate, Rylan Huff, Damien Marquez, Ethan Upton, Jackson Vermuele and Guy Wallace.

Congratulations to the Dolores High School baseball team. The boys beat Meeker and Hotchkiss over the weekend to advance to regionals. The boys will play Resurrection Christian on Friday at 10 a.m. in Pueblo at Runyon complex Hobbs field.

Important dates

MAY 15-17: DHS Track @ Denver (State Meet)

MAY 16: DHS Baseball @ Pueblo vs. Resurrection Christian (10 a.m.)

MAY 19: Senior Awards Night, 5 p.m.

MAY 19-20: DHS Golf State

MAY 20: Eighth-grade Continuation 6 p.m. (Main Gym)

MAY 21: Middle School Track Banquet 7 p.m. (Common’s Area)

Shannon Livick

event of the year Graduation for Dolores High School seniors, our big kids, is just around the corner.
