(Jerry McBride\/Durango Herald)<\/span><span class=\"credit\">cca<\/span><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<\/p><p>Rocky Mountain Chocolate Factory\u2019s popular birthday cake truffles were being pulled from shelves Friday in some of the company\u2019s 140 franchise and 110 co-branded locations in what CEO Jeff Geygan called a \u201cquality decision.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Geygan denied it being a recall, saying the product poses no health risk to customers, and that the truffles were pulled because they did not meet the company\u2019s quality standards.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThere\u2019s no product recall here \u2013 there\u2019s nothing wrong with that product that would hurt a human being,\u201d Geygan told <em id=\"emphasis-aff1801b23f114ce503f1f5f21b91f00\">The Durango Herald<\/em> Friday. \u201cI\u2019m just not satisfied with the quality of it. \u2026 All we did is made a quality decision and said, \u2018We\u2019re going to put this on quality hold.\u2019\u201d<\/p>\n<p>When asked what about the truffles did not meet the company\u2019s quality standards, Geygan declined to answer, saying the information was proprietary.<\/p>\n<p>A mass email was sent out to stores Thursday informing owners that they would receive credit in exchange for tossing out their stock of birthday cake truffles, Geygan said \u2013 but owners are not required to do so.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe\u2019re saying, \u2018Why don\u2019t you take all the stuff you have at the store, toss it \u2013 we\u2019ll give you a credit. Some of the company's stock of the truffles were being pulled from shelves Friday in what CEO Jeff Geygan called a \"quality decision.\"(Elizabeth Pond\/Durango Herald)<\/span><span class=\"credit\">cca<\/span><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<\/p><p>A Rocky Mountain Chocolate Factory employee who works on the factory floor and declined to provide their name for fear of losing their job told the<em id=\"emphasis-d5a56018b19e5ce8afa3270bf8f9f8ac\"> Herald <\/em>Friday the truffles were being pulled because they appeared green inside, and said there were rumors that they had been contaminated and were not safe for consumption.<\/p>\n<p>The employee said the truffles were being thrown out in droves at the factory Friday.<\/p>\n<p>Geygan said he knew nothing about the truffles appearing green, and denied any allegations of contamination or health risks associated with the truffles.<\/p>\n<p>The employee called the factory floor conditions \u201cdisgusting,\u201d and claimed there is no quality control staff member working on the floor because the previous one allegedly quit. The wrong nuts have been put in the wrong chocolates and still sold, the employee said, and products that are not meant to be frozen have been.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI don\u2019t even know if I want to work here anymore,\u201d the employee said. \u201c\u2026 The working conditions here in the factories \u2013 everything is just disgusting.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Geygan said the factory currently employs three people for quality control, and no employees occupying that role have quit. One of the three quality control employees was recently moved into an administrative capacity to \u201cdo more oversight work,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p>Geygan said RMCF puts some products in a \u201cfreezer situation\u201d set below freezing to deep freeze items in advance of the holidays.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s not a concern,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p>Geygan said though he would like to say chocolates don\u2019t ever end up with the wrong type of nuts in them, he can\u2019t definitively confirm that it \u201cnever happens.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The employee said the boxes of birthday cake truffles being pulled were from January, and stores have been selling them since then.<\/p>\n<p>Geygan said he was unsure of exactly when the batch being pulled from shelves was made, but that it \u201cwould have been not too long ago.\u201d He said the batches currently being sold in stores likely would have been shipped out several weeks ago.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s the right thing to do,\u201d Geygan said about the choice to pull the truffles. \u201c \u2026 We\u2019re serious about producing nothing but premium quality product.
