The Farmington Police Department has identified a man fatally shot by officers on Hines Road on March 10.<\/p>\n

Leon Quintana, 27, was the subject of a police investigation into an alleged domestic violence dispute that involved a handgun.<\/p>\n

\u201cDomestic violence calls are among the most dangerous situations officers encounter, often involving rapidly evolving and unpredictable circumstances,\u201d police spokeswoman Shanice Gonzales said in a news release.<\/p>\n

The domestic incident was reported to 911 dispatch around 9:30 a.m. by a woman who was not on scene but said her sister texted her and asked her to call police \u201cbecause her boyfriend Leon Quintana has a gun pointed at her face,\u201d according to a recording of the call provided by Farmington police.<\/p>\n

The woman told dispatch to \u201cmake no noise because he\u2019s really upset.\u201d<\/p>\n

When officers arrived, they found Quintana and his girlfriend outside, walking on the road in the 1100 block of Hines Road.<\/p>\n

\u201cOfficers gave commands for Mr. Quintana to place his hands on his head and walk backward toward them,\u201d the news release says.<\/p>\n

In video released by police, an officer told Quintana, \u201cYou\u2019re doing great. Keep coming.\u201d<\/p>\n

Quintana later lowered his hands and turned toward police. \u201cHe then produced a firearm and fired a shot toward officers, striking an officer\u2019s patrol car,\u201d the release says. \u201cA second shot was also fired.\u201d<\/p>\n

Officers Brian Castillo, Dustin Parsons and Lliam Hoskovec fired at least one shot each, striking Quintana, according to the release.<\/p>\n

Quintana could be seen on the pavement continuing to move, as one officer stated he did not see the gun. Another officer said the gun was near Quintana\u2019s shoes. Quintana\u2019s girlfriend, who was standing nearby, was not shot and could be heard screaming in the video as she ran toward the house.<\/p>\n

Officers slowly approached Quintana and continued to give orders for him to keep his hands up while he moved on the pavement.<\/p>\n

According to the news release, officers immediately rendered aid after the shooting, but Quintana died at the scene.<\/p>\n

The San Juan County Shooting Task Force is investigating the shooting, and the domestic violence incident remains under investigation.<\/p>\n

The case will be turned over to the San Juan County District Attorney\u2019s Office for review once the investigation is complete, according to Chief Deputy District Attorney Brian Decker.<\/p>\n
