First National Bank also donated $1,000 to  each of the three staff members.<\/p>\n<p>High school math teacher Susan Wisenbaker received the Secondary Educator of the Year Award.<\/p>\n<p>First-grade teacher Kathy Carpenter from Manaugh Elementary was chosen as the Elementary Educator of the Year.<\/p>\n<p>The employee of the year award went to custodian Ray Vialpando.<\/p>\n<p>Susan Wisenbaker<\/p>\n<p>High school Principal Jason Wayman outlined some of Wisenbaker\u2019s outstanding data and feedback from students during the presentation.<\/p>\n<p>Advanced placement scores on calculus tests in her class have continually increased and 100 percent of students reported they don\u2019t waste time in Wisenbaker\u2019s class, he said.<\/p>\n<p>Wisenbaker was a mechanical engineer before she became a teacher and has been teaching in the district for five years.<\/p>\n<p>She is particularly excited that half the senior class next has signed up for a math class that will count toward college credit after a change in the co-enrollment rules.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe\u2019re constantly trying to up our game,\u201d she said of the math department.<\/p>\n<p>Kathy Carpenter<\/p>\n<p>Carpenter fell in love with teaching first grade after moving to Cortez three years ago.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s a great place to be to build the foundations,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n<p>After working as a middle school and elementary math coach, she never thought she wanted to teach first grade. But she loved their eagerness to learn and their willingness to share what they are thinking.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat we do in K-1-2 is just vital to the future,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n<p>Ray Viapando<\/p>\n<p>There was a general acknowledgment that Vialpando was the best choice when he was announced.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cEveryone said: Yep that\u2019s right,\u201d Superintendent Alex Carter said.<\/p>\n<p>Vialpando has worked for the district for almost 12 years and loves his job, he said through an American Sign Language translator.<\/p>\n<p>He didn\u2019t have immediate plans for the award money.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI\u2019m feeling great,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"mailto:mshinn@cortezjournal.com\">mshinn@cortezjournal.com<\/a><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Secondary teacher of the year Susan Wisenbaker, elementary teacher of the year Katherine Carpenter and employee of the year Ray Vialpando receive a $1,000 check from First National Bank represented by Byron Maynes.
