Over the past eight years, playing the piano has been a significant part of local resident Emily Martin\u2019s life.<\/p>\n

Now, the Montezuma-Cortez High School sophomore and member of the Battle Rock 4-H Club has been crowned Grand Champion in the piano category of the senior instrumental division at the Colorado State Fair.<\/p>\n

To secure her Grand Champion designation, Martin performed Scott Joplin\u2019s \u201cMaple Leaf Rag\u201d in front of several judges in Pueblo, Colo., on Aug. 29.<\/p>\n

According to Martin, \u201cMaple Leaf Rag,\u201d known for its distinct rhythm and catchy introduction, is one of her favorite pieces of music.<\/p>\n

\u201cI\u2019ve just always liked \u201cMaple Leaf Rag,\u201d said Martin. \u201cIt\u2019s really fun (to play).\u201d<\/p>\n

Martin\u2019s Grand Champion performance at the State Fair follows a Grand Champion performance at the Montezuma County Fair where she was the only piano player.<\/p>\n

Martin, who takes piano lessons with local teacher Lillian Allen, also plays the French horn in the M-CHS band.<\/p>\n

Asked whether she would like to eventually pursue a career in music, Martin explained that she would.<\/p>\n

For the time being however, the up and coming music maker plans to focus on school, practice piano and prepare for next year\u2019s State Fair.<\/p>\n

\u201cI definitely want to do piano stuff again next year,\u201d said Martin. \u201cI haven\u2019t decided on what piece I\u2019m going to play. I still have time.\u201d<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
