{"id":117183,"date":"2014-10-14T06:01:00","date_gmt":"2014-10-14T12:01:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/dh.durangoherald.com\/tj\/the-king-of-country\/"},"modified":"2014-10-14T06:01:00","modified_gmt":"2014-10-14T12:01:00","slug":"the-king-of-country","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/dh.durangoherald.com\/tj\/the-king-of-country\/","title":{"rendered":"The King of Country"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p><!-- gallery:288f592e-694a-4fc4-942a-899c2d2eb76b --><\/p>\n<p>A legend will grace the halls of the Cortez Elks Club, a legend that has recorded more than 35 albums and is a member of the Western Music Hall of Fame.<\/p>\n<p>Michael Martin Murphey will perform a concert Saturday, Oct. 18 at 7 p.m. benefiting Hospice of Montezuma.<\/p>\n<p>Murphey is best known for his song \u201cWildfire\u201d, a chart-topping song from the mid \u201970s about the ghosts of a woman and her horse.<\/p>\n<p>The song eventually surpassed $2 million in U.S. sales.<\/p>\n<p>At the age of 69, Murphey hasn\u2019t slowed down much. He still performs sold-out concerts, recently released an album titled \u201cRed River Drifter\u201d and is busy with his ranch in Beulah, Colo.<\/p>\n<p>When the Journal caught up with Murphey via cellphone this week, he was on his way to a ranch to consider the purchase of a flatbed pickup to haul hay.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cTypical ranch stuff,\u201d Murphey said.<\/p>\n<p>This is the second performance Murphey has done to benefit Hospice of Montezuma.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHospice is something we don\u2019t like to think about, but it\u2019s such a needed thing,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p>Hospice of Montezuma is a local, nonprofit organization providing care for people facing an incurable illness or injury. Most receive services in their homes, but care is also provided in assisted living facilities, nursing homes and hospitals. While the majority of their patients are on Medicare, Medicaid or private insurance, no patient is ever denied services due to an inability to pay. It is their policy to never discriminate. Any person who meets the Hospice admission criteria will be served.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cGenerous contributions from the community, grants and fundraisers such as this concert allow us to provide services to people in need,\u201d said Queenie Barz, with Hospice of Montezuma.<\/p>\n<p>Murphey said he is happy to help out the organization.<\/p>\n<p>When asked what songs he\u2019ll play, Murphey said, \u201cIt\u2019s a secret.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>But he is sure to play \u201cWildfire.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s everyone\u2019s all-time favorite, so that makes it my all-time favorite too,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p>He will also play songs from his new album. His favorite: \u201cSecret Smile.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Barz said she is always pleased with Murphey\u2019s concerts. This is his second concert benefiting Hospice of Montezuma, and he has performed at the Opera House in Mancos a few times.<\/p>\n<p>Murphey is a No. 1 best-selling singer\/songwriter of American cowboy music, and is a respected singer\/songwriter in the pop and country-western fields. He\u2019s a member of the Western Music Hall of Fame and has won numerous awards and honors from the National Cowboy Hall of Fame, Academy of Country Music and The Grammy Awards.<\/p>\n<div class=\"naviga-scoreboard\">\n<h4 class=\"scoreboard-title\">How to attend<\/h4>\n<p>Michael Martin Murphey<br>\n                Where: The Cortez Elks Club, 2100 N.
