In a world of increasing megapixels, faster digital cameras and increasingly shrinking cameras, Mancos photographer Brian Killigrew has bucked the trend.<\/p>\n
Killigrew, unlike most photographers of today, hauls his large-format camera around on a wooden tripod. The large-format camera looks like something out of a Western movie, complete with a black cloth he drapes over his head when outdoors. It produces a negative that measures 4-by-5-inches and needs to be developed in a darkroom.<\/p>\n
Yes, a darkroom.<\/p>\n
Killigrew has one in his Mancos home.<\/p>\n
\u201cMany people don\u2019t even know what a darkroom is anymore,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n
But inside the darkroom is where Killigrew\u2019s images come alive. It is where he makes his black and white prints, 40 of which will be on display at Olio in Mancos Nov. 8 through Jan. 3.<\/p>\n
\u201cI can compose a beautiful photograph with my camera, but it is in the darkroom where all the subconscious comes. It\u2019s where all the surprises happen,\u201d he said. \u201cThe print is really the completion of the process.\u201d<\/p>\n
Killigrew, 58, is from New York City. He moved to the Mancos area two years ago and is loving it. He worked as a photographer and print developer in New York. He estimates he has printed 400,000 prints in his life, and he still isn\u2019t tired of it.<\/p>\n
\u201cThe print is really the completion of the process,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n
Inside his darkroom, recently, Killigrew demonstrated his process. It is long and complicated. It requires exact timing, the right exposure and a correct mixture of chemicals.<\/p>\n
He pulled a piece of paper out of the dark, clicked a button and counted to 20. He excitedly grabbed the paper from under the enlarger and placed it into a bath of developer. A faint image of Shiprock appears.<\/p>\n
But he isn\u2019t happy with it.<\/p>\n
\u201cThere isn\u2019t enough detail here,\u201d he says. \u201cAnd the sky is dark.\u201d<\/p>\n
So back to the enlarger he went. He pulled out another sheet of photo paper and started again. He counted to 20, but this time, he started to count again, but put his hands over different spots here and there, a rhythmic dance with the exposure.<\/p>\n
Again, he took the paper to the developer bath.<\/p>\n
\u201cAh, much better,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n
But it could be even better.<\/p>\n
\u201cThis looks decent, but it needs a little more oomph or some drama to it,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n
Most of the time, it takes Killigrew an entire day to get one or two prints perfect. There are times it take as long as a week to get one print perfect.<\/p>\n
Even after 40 years of developing, the process still isn\u2019t old.<\/p>\n
\u201cThis is what I do best in life,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n
The darkroom is where Killigrew is most comfortable.<\/p>\n
\u201cWhen I\u2019m photographing, I don\u2019t necessarily see everything,\u201d he said. \u201cI get to see everything in an image in the darkroom.\u201d<\/p>\n
Every little detail is there for him to inspect, and he hopes the viewers of the show in Mancos will appreciate those details.<\/p>\n
He only works in black and white photographs.<\/p>\n
\u201cWith black and white, I am trying to show the mystery and the spirit of whatever I\u2019m photographing,\u201d he said.\u201cIn a way, black and white is more abstract and shows the abstract of things, I am trying to get beyond the pretty surface. Black and white can be very emotional and have a lot of feeling.\u201d<\/p>\n
In today\u2019s world of digital photography, Killigrew feels that people don\u2019t really look at images anymore, something he knows his art will change.<\/p>\n
\u201cPeople\u2019s eyes are bombarded with images ever day,\u201d he said. \u201cTo look at a still image takes patience and time, and today people have 30-second lives.\u201d<\/p>\n
