The effort to recall Mancos School Board member Beverly Humiston-Scott is one step closer to going to voters.<\/p>\n
Montezuma County Clerk and Recorder Carol Tullis confirmed that the petition to oust Humiston-Scott received the required 212 signatures. Tullis said the group turned in 267 signatures, of which 220 were accepted, opening the recall effort to its next level.<\/p>\n
Tullis said that Humiston-Scott now has until the end of the week to file a protest.<\/p>\n
If no protest is filed, Tullis will set a date for the recall election.<\/p>\n
Pam Coppinger, a member of the committee to recall Humiston-Scott and a retired teacher, said it took a lot of time to gather all those signatures.<\/p>\n
\u201cI am a retired teacher, and I am worried about the example she has set for our students,\u201d Coppinger said.<\/p>\n
Coppinger said being censured and escorted out of a school board meeting was the end of the line.<\/p>\n
\u201cIf any of our students behaved the way she did, they would have been suspended or possibly expelled,\u201d she said. \u201cThe school board sits on the stage at graduation. They are an example.\u201d<\/p>\n
Coppinger said they also have the right to protest any of the signatures that were removed as well.<\/p>\n
\u201cWe don\u2019t want to embarrass her. We just feel she needs to be held accountable for her behavior,\u201d Coppinger said.<\/p>\n
When asked to comment on the recall effort, Humiston-Scott said, \u201cThe only thing I am guilty of is questioning the budget and salaries. This is my hometown and community and I will always care about the kids receiving a great education.\u201d<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
