Montezuma County Sheriff-elect Steve Nowlin gave Dolores town board members an update of his plans.<\/p>\n
Dolores contracts with the sheriff\u2019s office to provide law enforcement coverage for town. This year, the contract was for $150,000.<\/p>\n
\u201cI\u2019m concerned about some of the expenses in the contract,\u201d Nowlin said.<\/p>\n
The board decided to wait until Nowlin took office in January before negotiating a new contract.<\/p>\n
Nowlin also said he would work with Dolores on choosing which officer will mainly cover town.<\/p>\n
\u201cI\u2019ll provide officers for the board to interview to determine the best fit for the Dolores assignment,\u201d Nowlin said.<\/p>\n
Another idea Nowlin is exploring is setting up mounted patrols for town.<\/p>\n
\u201cIt works in other towns and is a form of effective community policing,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n
The steeds would come from horse rescue organizations. Nowlin said officers with riding experience have already expressed interest.<\/p>\n
