{"id":115252,"date":"2015-01-14T21:19:50","date_gmt":"2015-01-15T04:19:50","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/dh.durangoherald.com\/tj\/groovers-set-for-one-night-at-permit-party-2\/"},"modified":"2015-01-14T21:19:50","modified_gmt":"2015-01-15T04:19:50","slug":"groovers-set-for-one-night-at-permit-party-2","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/dh.durangoherald.com\/tj\/groovers-set-for-one-night-at-permit-party-2\/","title":{"rendered":"Groovers set for one night at permit party"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p><!-- gallery:dc7e719d-8e24-4546-83e0-e243c04ab125 --><\/p>\n<p>For one night, Dolores will be treated to music by The Groovers.<\/p>\n<p>Andy Hutchinson usually plays for local bluegrass favorite The Last Nickel, but because some band members are out of the country, he has gathered a few friends to form a new band.<\/p>\n<p>They\u2019ll perform Friday, Jan. 16 during the Dolores River Boating Advocates\u2019 Annual Permit Party at the Dolores Community Center.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cFor one night only, we are calling ourselves The Groovers,\u201d said Hutchinson, a banjo player and vocalist.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThat name was thrown out there, and we grabbed it,\u201d Hutchinson said. \u201cIt\u2019s tongue and cheek, but we decided to go with it for this party.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Hutchinson has a way with names.<\/p>\n<p>A \u201cgroover\u201d is a not-so-romantic part of river rafting trips. It\u2019s the name rafters gave portable toilets, a name referring to the grooves left on your behind from sitting on it.<\/p>\n<p>He and his wife, Kate Thompson, and Mark Youngquist also had a band called Cowboy Sushi.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe just like coming up with random names,\u201d Hutchinson said.<\/p>\n<p>Playing as The Groovers will be Hutchinson on banjo and vocals, Kate Thompson on guitar and vocals, Bobby Winteringham on mandolin and vocals, Chris Bouton on guitar, and Mark Youngquist on the banjolele.<\/p>\n<p>Hutchinson said listeners will recognizes songs played by The Last Nickel, which performs at local events including Escalante Days and the Dolores River Festival.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe will also play cover songs with a bluegrass twist,\u201d Hutchinson said.<\/p>\n<p>The Groovers start up about 8 p.m.<\/p>\n<p>Hutchinson, who makes dories and is a Grand Canyon River Guide, said he plays whenever he gets the chance.
