{"id":115127,"date":"2015-01-21T19:43:13","date_gmt":"2015-01-22T02:43:13","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/dh.durangoherald.com\/tj\/town-may-purchase-cortez-bandwidth\/"},"modified":"2015-01-21T19:43:13","modified_gmt":"2015-01-22T02:43:13","slug":"town-may-purchase-cortez-bandwidth","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/dh.durangoherald.com\/tj\/town-may-purchase-cortez-bandwidth\/","title":{"rendered":"Town may purchase Cortez bandwidth"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>Cortez and Dolores are working together for faster Internet in government offices.<\/p>\n<p>The Cortez City Council on Jan. 13 approved a memorandum of understanding that allows the town of Dolores to buy bandwidth from Cortez.<\/p>\n<p>The arrangement is a part of the recent $4 million Southwest Colorado Access Network project, which aimed to build an open access telecommunications network to provide secure connections and faster Internet speeds in community public offices in 16 participating areas, including Montezuma County.<\/p>\n<p>As part of the project, Cortez obtained grants to purchase a hub router, which allows nearby towns to connect to it.<\/p>\n<p>At the meeting, city manager Shane Hale described Cortez as the \u201cbike tire\u201d and other municipalities \u2013 Mancos, Dove Creek, Ute Mountain Ute Tribe, Dolores \u2013 as possible \u201cspokes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The city can purchase significant amounts of bandwidth on behalf of the group at a bulk price, and resell a portion to \u201cspoke\u201d communities.<\/p>\n<p>Hale said that the city has been buying 250 mbps of fiber network of bandwidth capacity for the past few years, and has been planning to resell a portion of it to towns as their fiber optic infrastructure gets in place.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDolores is interested in purchasing 5 mbps a month for $50 per month,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p>Private market rates for 50 mbps average $75, depending on the service provider.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe have the option to get through city or whomever we would like, but we work with the city, we know the city\u2019s employees so it works well for us and the price is fine,\u201d said Lana Hancock, interim town manager for Dolores.<\/p>\n<p>Mancos entered a bandwidth agreement with Cortez in July to buy 4 mbps for $40 per month.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Government offices would have faster Internet<\/p>\n","protected":false},"author":1,"featured_media":0,"comment_status":"open","ping_status":"open","sticky":false,"template":"","format":"standard","meta":{"_acf_changed":false,"footnotes":""},"categories":[6363],"tags":[188,13],"naviga_topic":[],"class_list":["post-115127","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","hentry","category-ds-news","tag-dolores-star","tag-frontpage-lead"],"acf":[],"author_name":"dh_admin","_links":{"self":[{"href":"https:\/\/dh.durangoherald.com\/tj\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts\/115127","targetHints":{"allow":["GET"]}}],"collection":[{"href":"https:\/\/dh.durangoherald.com\/tj\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts"}],"about":[{"href":"https:\/\/dh.durangoherald.com\/tj\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/types\/post"}],"author":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/dh.durangoherald.com\/tj\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/users\/1"}],"replies":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/dh.durangoherald.com\/tj\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/comments?post=115127"}],"version-history":[{"count":0,"href":"https:\/\/dh.durangoherald.com\/tj\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts\/115127\/revisions"}],"wp:attachment":[{"href":"https:\/\/dh.durangoherald.com\/tj\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/media?parent=115127"}],"wp:term":[{"taxonomy":"category","embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/dh.durangoherald.com\/tj\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/categories?post=115127"},{"taxonomy":"post_tag","embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/dh.durangoherald.com\/tj\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/tags?post=115127"},{"taxonomy":"naviga_topic","embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/dh.durangoherald.com\/tj\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/naviga_topic?post=115127"}],"curies":[{"name":"wp","href":"https:\/\/api.w.org\/{rel}","templated":true}]}}
