After a work session last week, the Mancos School District Board of Education gave the nod to Superintendent Brian Hanson to apply for Innovative School status.<\/p>\n

If approved, Mancos School District would be the first in Colorado to earn such a status, which would essentially exempt the school district from taking state-mandated tests.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe are doing all this to shield ourselves from political noise,\u201d Hanson said.<\/p>\n

Hanson said the state mandates put undue hardships on smaller schools.<\/p>\n

\u201cI\u2019ve always been very vocal and outspoken against reforms and testing,\u201d Hanson said. \u201cWe all know schools are very successful, and teaching is probably better than it has ever been.\u201d<\/p>\n

Testing affects the school\u2019s accreditation, and that isn\u2019t fair, Hanson said.<\/p>\n

\u201cMy school is graded on a test that kids don\u2019t care about,\u201d he said. \u201cBecause of this, I want to do something different.\u201d<\/p>\n

Hanson said the Innovative Status would show that the school values teachers, leaders, Colorado Department of Education rubrics, support with peer coaching, Colorado Academic Standards, and teacher and student assessments. It would also require that the district partner with a college.<\/p>\n

\u201cThere is more to a kid than just a test score,\u201d Hanson said.<\/p>\n

He said he hopes to have the status approved by next year.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe will still show growth under the new plan,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n

Hanson said students will still probably have to test this spring.<\/p>\n

\u201cThese high-stakes tests don\u2019t work,\u201d Hanson said. \u201cWhether your scores are good or not good, that\u2019s not how you tell if a school is doing well. There are so many great things going on in the classroom.\u201d<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
