{"id":114664,"date":"2015-02-11T07:01:00","date_gmt":"2015-02-11T14:01:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/dh.durangoherald.com\/tj\/grocers-honored-as-citizens-of-the-year\/"},"modified":"2015-02-11T07:01:00","modified_gmt":"2015-02-11T14:01:00","slug":"grocers-honored-as-citizens-of-the-year","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/dh.durangoherald.com\/tj\/grocers-honored-as-citizens-of-the-year\/","title":{"rendered":"Grocers honored as Citizens of the Year"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p><figure class=\"wp-block-image naviga-inline-image\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/imengine.public.prod.dur.navigacloud.com\/?uuid=5241c348-a3bd-4a8a-af4b-688716d94321&amp;function=cover&amp;type=preview&amp;source=false&amp;width=2000\" srcset=\"https:\/\/imengine.public.prod.dur.navigacloud.com\/?uuid=5241c348-a3bd-4a8a-af4b-688716d94321&amp;function=cover&amp;type=preview&amp;source=false&amp;width=800 800w, https:\/\/imengine.public.prod.dur.navigacloud.com\/?uuid=5241c348-a3bd-4a8a-af4b-688716d94321&amp;function=cover&amp;type=preview&amp;source=false&amp;width=1200 1200w, https:\/\/imengine.public.prod.dur.navigacloud.com\/?uuid=5241c348-a3bd-4a8a-af4b-688716d94321&amp;function=cover&amp;type=preview&amp;source=false&amp;width=1800 1800w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 480px) 100vw, (max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 2000px\" width=\"1933\" height=\"1525\" alt=\"Rob Kirks and Pete Loyd, who co-own P&amp;D Grocery, receive the Mancos Citizens of the Year award.\" class=\"naviga-image\" loading=\"lazy\"><figcaption><span class=\"caption\">Rob Kirks and Pete Loyd, who co-own P&amp;D Grocery, receive the Mancos Citizens of the Year award.<\/span><span class=\"credit\">Sam Green\/Mancos Times<\/span><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<\/p><p>The winner of the Mancos Citizen of the Year was no surprise when the presenter mentioned feeding the community.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWithout fanfare or spotlight, they provided much-needed support during the fire,\u201d said Howard Thomas, with the Mancos Valley Lions Club.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAnd they have been feeding the community Thanksgiving Dinner for years,\u201d he said. \u201cPete Loyd and Rob Kirks are here for us in good times and bad.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Loyd and Kirks co-own P&amp;D Grocery in Mancos.<\/p>\n<p>The Mancos Valley Lions Club was last year\u2019s Citizen of the Year and got to decide who would win the award this year.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe had a wonderful time being ambassadors for Mancos,\u201d Thomas said of the club\u2019s time as the Citizens of the Year.<\/p>\n<p>Howard told the crowd at the Mancos Chamber of Commerce on Feb. 5 to hear the recipient of the honor, that the decision was a difficult one.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOur town is full of generous, dedicated, caring people,\u201d Thomas said.<\/p>\n<p>But when it came down to it, there were a series of contributions made by Loyd and Kirks that stood out.<\/p>\n<p>Providing food and drink to the firefighters during the Weber fire, providing an annual free meal to the community during Thanksgiving and giving countless trays of food to community events, all made this year\u2019s winner stand out.<\/p>\n<p>Both Loyd and Kirks said little when presented with the plaque proclaiming the honor.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe are both men of few words,\u201d Loyd said. \u201cIt takes a great community to be involved with everything that goes on.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Loyd also used his moment in the spotlight to highlight an upcoming event. On Sunday, Loyd donated 50 percent of the proceeds from Mancos Pizza to local families dealing with expensive medical conditions.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe hope to see everyone on Sunday,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p>Loyd got into the grocery business when he was in high school.
