{"id":114525,"date":"2015-02-17T21:11:05","date_gmt":"2015-02-18T04:11:05","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/dh.durangoherald.com\/tj\/worries-about-water-will-be-aired-feb-25\/"},"modified":"2015-02-17T21:11:05","modified_gmt":"2015-02-18T04:11:05","slug":"worries-about-water-will-be-aired-feb-25","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/dh.durangoherald.com\/tj\/worries-about-water-will-be-aired-feb-25\/","title":{"rendered":"Worries about water will be aired Feb. 25"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p><figure class=\"wp-block-image naviga-inline-image\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/imengine.public.prod.dur.navigacloud.com\/?uuid=9f1806cf-7077-42b4-9940-97473cf3c0a3&amp;function=cover&amp;type=preview&amp;source=false&amp;width=2000\" srcset=\"https:\/\/imengine.public.prod.dur.navigacloud.com\/?uuid=9f1806cf-7077-42b4-9940-97473cf3c0a3&amp;function=cover&amp;type=preview&amp;source=false&amp;width=800 800w, https:\/\/imengine.public.prod.dur.navigacloud.com\/?uuid=9f1806cf-7077-42b4-9940-97473cf3c0a3&amp;function=cover&amp;type=preview&amp;source=false&amp;width=1200 1200w, https:\/\/imengine.public.prod.dur.navigacloud.com\/?uuid=9f1806cf-7077-42b4-9940-97473cf3c0a3&amp;function=cover&amp;type=preview&amp;source=false&amp;width=1800 1800w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 480px) 100vw, (max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 2000px\" width=\"2000\" height=\"1057\" alt=\"Little snow this February has many worrying if Jackson Lake above Mancos will fill.\" class=\"naviga-image\" loading=\"lazy\"><figcaption><span class=\"caption\">Little snow this February has many worrying if Jackson Lake above Mancos will fill.<\/span><span class=\"credit\">Shannon Livick\/Mancos Times<\/span><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<\/p><p>While the winter weather this year has been pleasant for many of us, for Gary Kennedy, superintendent at the Mancos Water Conservancy District, the warm weather has been more than worrisome.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s hard to say anything until the end of March, but as things sit, it is not looking good,\u201d Kennedy said.<\/p>\n<p>Record high temperatures this February have already melted the lower-level snow pack, which isn\u2019t good news for Mancos water users.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI am sitting at 7,800 feet elevation, and the only snow I have visible is in the shaded areas under the trees,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p>Jackson Lake is at 37 percent of its capacity, a bit under the average of 40 percent for this time of year, Kennedy said.<\/p>\n<p>But the snowpack has Kennedy worried.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe rely 100 percent on snowpack,\u201d Kennedy said.<\/p>\n<p>And the snowpack that feeds into Jackson Lake is running at 52 percent of average.<\/p>\n<p>Most of the water for Mancos and Mesa Verde comes off of Hesperus Peak and Sharks Tooth.<\/p>\n<p>Kennedy said he has been in the water business for 25 years and he has seen it dry before, but he has never seen it this dry for this long.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis is our fourth year in a row of having to cut allocations.
