{"id":113164,"date":"2015-04-16T20:51:51","date_gmt":"2015-04-17T02:51:51","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/dh.durangoherald.com\/tj\/weekend-wonderland\/"},"modified":"2015-04-16T20:51:51","modified_gmt":"2015-04-17T02:51:51","slug":"weekend-wonderland","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/dh.durangoherald.com\/tj\/weekend-wonderland\/","title":{"rendered":"Weekend \u2018Wonderland\u2019"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p><!-- gallery:9783ab11-40c4-4438-bdad-d205e178767f --><\/p>\n<p>About 150 years after English author Charles Lutwidge Dodgson wrote \u201cAlice in Wonderland,\u201d members of the Cortez Middle School drama department are set to bring the classic novel to life this weekend.<\/p>\n<p>Performances will take place at the Cortez Middle School theater at 7 p.m. on April 17 and at 2 p.m. and 7 p.m. on April 18. Fifty-eight middle school students will be involved in the production, which actors and actresses described as a \u201ccan\u2019t miss\u201d performance.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOur play will be very interesting, and it will have a lot of cool and unique characters,\u201d said seventh-grader Rachael Burson, who is the play\u2019s assistant director. \u201cEveryone was cast really well based on their personalities.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Among the characters sure to make waves with the audience will be Alice, who is played by eighth-grader Amanda Sturman, and whose adventures serve as the backdrop for the play\u2019s plot.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMemorizing the lines has been challenging,\u201d said Sturman. \u201cI\u2019ve acted in quite a few plays, but this is my first lead role.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Other main characters include the Queen of Hearts, who will be played by eighth-grader Clarissa Dukeminier, and Humpty Dumpty, who will be played by seventh-grader Davian Robinson.<\/p>\n<p>\u201c(The Queen of Hearts) is evil and grouchy, but I enjoy the role,\u201d said Dukeminier. \u201cIt gives me a way of venting my anger out.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201c(Humpty Dumpty) is very awkward and complicated,\u201d said Robinson. \u201cThe role fits me perfectly.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Actors and actresses said that \u201cAlice in Wonderland\u201d will be staged on a colorful and complex set, which will include a giant chess board, a giant mushroom and the props necessary for a crazy tea party.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe concept with our set was to make sure that everything would flow and move easily,\u201d said Gabardi. \u201cAlice moves quickly through her adventure and we wanted the set to match that.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The play will be the second major production staged by Cortez Middle School students this year after students produced \u201cSnow White\u201d in December.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe people (in the play) are all really cool kids,\u201d said Burson. \u201cI really like them.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI hope that members of the community come and watch our play,\u201d added Dukeminier. \u201cIt\u2019s different than what people are used to and I think people will enjoy it.\u201d<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>department set to perform classic play this weekend<\/p>\n","protected":false},"author":1,"featured_media":113165,"comment_status":"open","ping_status":"open","sticky":false,"template":"","format":"standard","meta":{"_acf_changed":false,"footnotes":""},"categories":[5961,5843],"tags":[13],"naviga_topic":[],"class_list":["post-113164","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","hentry","category-arts-and-entertainment","category-living","tag-frontpage-lead"],"acf":[],"author_name":"dh_admin","_links":{"self":[{"href":"https:\/\/dh.durangoherald.com\/tj\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts\/113164","targetHints":{"allow":["GET"]}}],"collection":[{"href":"https:\/\/dh.durangoherald.com\/tj\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts"}],"about":[{"href":"https:\/\/dh.durangoherald.com\/tj\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/types\/post"}],"author":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/dh.durangoherald.com\/tj\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/users\/1"}],"replies":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/dh.durangoherald.com\/tj\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/comments?post=113164"}],"version-history":[{"count":0,"href":"https:\/\/dh.durangoherald.com\/tj\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts\/113164\/revisions"}],"wp:featuredmedia":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/dh.durangoherald.com\/tj\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/media\/113165"}],"wp:attachment":[{"href":"https:\/\/dh.durangoherald.com\/tj\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/media?parent=113164"}],"wp:term":[{"taxonomy":"category","embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/dh.durangoherald.com\/tj\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/categories?post=113164"},{"taxonomy":"post_tag","embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/dh.durangoherald.com\/tj\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/tags?post=113164"},{"taxonomy":"naviga_topic","embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/dh.durangoherald.com\/tj\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/naviga_topic?post=113164"}],"curies":[{"name":"wp","href":"https:\/\/api.w.org\/{rel}","templated":true}]}}
