{"id":112947,"date":"2015-04-27T17:50:43","date_gmt":"2015-04-27T23:50:43","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/dh.durangoherald.com\/tj\/music-fills-m-chs-during-state-fest\/"},"modified":"2015-04-27T17:50:43","modified_gmt":"2015-04-27T23:50:43","slug":"music-fills-m-chs-during-state-fest","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/dh.durangoherald.com\/tj\/music-fills-m-chs-during-state-fest\/","title":{"rendered":"Music fills M-CHS during state fest"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p><!-- gallery:7cf7dcee-0b45-4bda-bf47-203c235023fd --><\/p>\n<p>Seventh-grader Madison Harmon, a Cortez Middle School student, was a bit nervous on Friday.<\/p>\n<p>Soon, she would be on the stage in front of an audience, including judges, playing her trumpet with the CMS band as part of the Colorado High School Activities Association Music Festival at the Montezuma-Cortez High School.<\/p>\n<p>Nearly 700 musicians and singers, both from middle school and high school from around the Four Corners area, arrived at Cortez High School for the event.<\/p>\n<p>For Harmon, who has been playing the trumpet for two years, it was her first competition of this kind.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe\u2019ve been practicing a lot,\u201d Harmon said. \u201cI\u2019m a little nervous.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>But it is all worth it, Harmon said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhen I play the trumpet, it calms all my stress,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n<p>Don Waltman, of Windsor, said he taught band for 35 years and has been judging competitions for 20 years. The list of things judges look for is long: tone, notes, rhythm, and even posture.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI see a lot of really great things going on,\u201d Waltman said.<\/p>\n<p>Cortez Middle School Band director Andrew Campo was pleased with the eighth-graders\u2019 performance on Friday.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThat was fantastic,\u201d he said. \u201cThat is the best CMS has played in years.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The eighth-graders played \u201cActivity March,\u201d \u201cOld Irish Tune\u201d and \u201cSea Song Fantasy.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe judge was impressed with their maturity and dedication,\u201d Campo said.<\/p>\n<p>Anna Bullock and Maddi Cooper, both ninth-graders, performed first in the choir competition.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt felt like it went really well,\u201d Cooper said.<\/p>\n<p>After they belted out three songs, they were critiqued by the judges.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe need a little more expression in our singing,\u201d Cooper said.<\/p>\n<p>Bullock said she always looks forward to the event.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s an opportunity for people to learn how to perform,\u201d she said. \u201cEveryone has a different sound. It\u2019s fun to listen to others perform.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Kaleb Burris, a junior at Cortez High School, said he was pleased with the choir\u2019s performance.<\/p>\n<p>They earned ratings of 2, based on a scale ranging from a high of 1 to a low of 5. The choir group scored a 1 on sight reading.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou\u2019ve gotta love singing,\u201d Burris said. \u201cI just like seeing other choirs and bands.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>When the day ended, the middle school band members scored well. The 8th-grade band was awarded a very high Excellent rating and a Superior rating in sight-reading.
