With rain falling at the Cobble Creek Golf Club in Montrose on May 5, the Dolores High School girls\u2019 golf team finished sixth at the Class 4A West Slope Regional Golf Tournament.<\/p>\n

Leading the way for Dolores was junior Kiselya Plewe, who, seemingly unbothered by the wet conditions, fired a tournament-best round of 73. With her victory, Plewe remained undefeated on the season and qualified for state.<\/p>\n

\u201c(Winning) feels great,\u201d said the junior, who attends Montezuma-Cortez High School. \u201cI love this course and I\u2019m just glad I put a good round together today. It was fun.\u201d<\/p>\n

Also turning in an impressive round for Dolores was junior Keyana Matteson, who matched her season-best score of 101 and narrowly missed qualifying for state.<\/p>\n

\u201c(Keyana\u2019s) short game was really solid early in the round,\u201d said Dolores head coach Jeff Carr. \u201cWith the inclement weather, she had a couple of bad holes and that kept her out of the state tournament.\u201d<\/p>\n

Rounding out the Dolores team\u2019s players was home-schooled junior Abigail Smith, who shot a career-best round of 108 to wrap up just her second year of competitive golf.<\/p>\n

\u201cThrough her hard work this year, (Abigail\u2019s) swing has gotten tighter,\u201d Carr said. \u201cShe can generate more power through the ball and her distance has improved considerably.\u201d<\/p>\n

As a team, the Lady Bears shot a season best score of 282. Montrose High School finished first in the tournament with a combined score of 255.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt feels really good to finish where we did,\u201d said Carr. \u201cI kind of wish that our season would be a little bit longer because we are steadily improving and I think we could get even better.\u201d<\/p>\n

Although the Dolores team will not compete at state, Plewe will represent the Lady Bears at Colorado\u2019s premiere female prep golfing event, which will take place at the River Valley Ranch Golf Club in Carbondale, May 18-19.<\/p>\n

\u201cKiselya won in Aspen a couple of weeks ago, so she knows the course,\u201d said Carr. \u201cThis week, we\u2019re going to work on her short game and work out a good strategy for the course. I\u2019m very hopeful for a good finish and I do believe that Kiselya has the skills to win it.\u201d<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
