{"id":112160,"date":"2015-05-26T21:26:22","date_gmt":"2015-05-27T03:26:22","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/dh.durangoherald.com\/tj\/take-the-pledge-for-boating-safely-this-summer\/"},"modified":"2015-05-26T21:26:22","modified_gmt":"2015-05-27T03:26:22","slug":"take-the-pledge-for-boating-safely-this-summer","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/dh.durangoherald.com\/tj\/take-the-pledge-for-boating-safely-this-summer\/","title":{"rendered":"Take the pledge for boating safely this summer"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>According to the U.S. Coast Guard\u2019s 2014 Recreational Boating Safety Statistics more than $11 million boats are registered in the United States and more than $38 million has been lost in property damage in 2014.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cProperty loss and personal injury can be prevented,\u201d said  Kris Wahlers, CPW boat safety program manager. \u201cPledging to boat safely means saving money and lives.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>A boat safety class helps too.<\/p>\n<p>Fifty-five percent of operators involved in boating accidents in 2014 did not take a boating safety course, and were between the ages of 21 \u2013 30.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cA boat safety course can train and refresh boaters on the skills necessary to be safe all summer long,\u201d added Wahlers.<\/p>\n<p>Schedule and view available boat safety courses at www.register-ed.com.<\/p>\n<p>Pledge to boat safely means always boating responsibly by:<\/p>\n<p>Wearing my life jacket and ensuring that everyone on board wears their life jacket (when in a small boat, or operating in rough water or threatening weather conditions)<\/p>\n<p>Remaining sober and alert \u2013 remembering that the use of alcohol contributes to accidents on the water;<\/p>\n<p>Staying in control of my craft and respecting the right of others enjoying the waterways;<\/p>\n<p>Knowing and obeying navigation rules, operating at a safe speed and maintaining a proper lookout.<\/p>\n<p>Go to http:\/\/www.safeboatingcampaign.com\/national-pledge-card.pdf to access the card, and fill it out with the family. In addition to taking the pledge, be sure to operate your boat safely by practicing good seamanship. Take action in ample time to avoid a collision.
