\u201cIt appears he was on a snowbridge, and it collapsed. He went into the creek and was trapped under snow,\u201d Metzler said.<\/p>\n
San Juan County Sheriff Bruce Conrad told the Standard that the Durango teenager who died had \u201cwalked up the snowfield and slipped on an incline into water underneath. The dog went in to help him,\u201d Conrad said.<\/p>\n
\u201cWe were able to recover the young man, and the dog came out alive,\u201d Conrad said.<\/p>\n
\u201cThree hours later, he came out the other side,\u201d Conrad said. The dog, a Great Dane-pit bull mix named Zia, emerged 5\u00bd hours later.<\/p>\n
