Standing in front of a U.S. flag with a dozen portraits of veterans, restaurant owner Jack Kays was nearly speechless after a round of applause from patrons.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI was wowed,\u201d said Kays. \u201cThis is a great honor.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>In business for the past six years on Main Street, Kays said the family-owned restaurant had always catered to military veterans, providing discounts on meals and free meeting space for veterans organizations.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMy dad served in the Navy,\u201d said Kays. \u201cMy twin sons are currently serving.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>In a nomination letter, Sanders described Jack &amp; Janelle\u2019s as a gathering place for local veterans, noting that the owners graciously accepted and treated veterans with respect.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAs a small, individually owned restaurant, Jack and Janelle\u2019s has a huge impact in our community,\u201d said Sanders.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Kays of Jack and Janelle\u2019s Country Kitchen receives a plaque from Robert Sanders, commander of the local chapter of the Disabled American Veterans Commander Robert Sanders.Sam Green\/Cortez Journal \u201cMore than 600 nominations were received from across Colorado,\u201d said Dunger Smith No. 44 DAV Commander Robert Sanders.
