{"id":111387,"date":"2015-07-01T16:20:42","date_gmt":"2015-07-01T22:20:42","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/dh.durangoherald.com\/tj\/goose-quilt-a-masterpiece\/"},"modified":"2015-07-01T16:20:42","modified_gmt":"2015-07-01T22:20:42","slug":"goose-quilt-a-masterpiece","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/dh.durangoherald.com\/tj\/goose-quilt-a-masterpiece\/","title":{"rendered":"Goose quilt a masterpiece"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p><figure class=\"wp-block-image naviga-inline-image\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/imengine.public.prod.dur.navigacloud.com\/?uuid=80d3ad2f-d480-4869-85dc-0e11508567a5&amp;function=cover&amp;type=preview&amp;source=false&amp;width=2000\" srcset=\"https:\/\/imengine.public.prod.dur.navigacloud.com\/?uuid=80d3ad2f-d480-4869-85dc-0e11508567a5&amp;function=cover&amp;type=preview&amp;source=false&amp;width=800 800w, https:\/\/imengine.public.prod.dur.navigacloud.com\/?uuid=80d3ad2f-d480-4869-85dc-0e11508567a5&amp;function=cover&amp;type=preview&amp;source=false&amp;width=1200 1200w, https:\/\/imengine.public.prod.dur.navigacloud.com\/?uuid=80d3ad2f-d480-4869-85dc-0e11508567a5&amp;function=cover&amp;type=preview&amp;source=false&amp;width=1800 1800w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 480px) 100vw, (max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 2000px\" width=\"2000\" height=\"1453\" alt=\"Sam Green\/Dolores Star&lt;br&gt;&lt;br&gt;LaWanna Ferrier has donated this quilt to the Galloping Goose Society.\" class=\"naviga-image\" loading=\"lazy\"><figcaption><span class=\"caption\">Sam Green\/Dolores Star&lt;br&gt;&lt;br&gt;LaWanna Ferrier has donated this quilt to the Galloping Goose Society.<\/span><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<\/p><p>LaWanna Ferrier has donated a quilt featuring the Galloping Goose No. 5 as part of a fundraiser for maintenance and operation of the Goose.<\/p>\n<p>It\u2019s displayed in the Galloping Goose Historical Society Museum in Dolores, and will be auctioned on e-Bay.<\/p>\n<p>Ferrier said she spent 500 hours on the quilt, which features a large silver graphic of the rail bus, along with photos taken in the early 1900s.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt was delightful to work on it, and makes me feel good to donate it in support of an interesting piece of local history,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n<p>The design, which features images printed on the fabric, was challenging, Ferrier said, but skill and persistence paid off.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cFinding a printer to do what I wanted was a stumbling block,\u201d she said. \u201cI finally found one who was able to print the photographs directly on fabric, and I really like the results.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The photos highlight the Goose\u2019s evolution, from its Pierce-Arrow touring car body in 1933 and Wayne Bus Body conversion in 1946 to the freight-box conversion for passengers in 1950.<\/p>\n<p>The quilt\u2019s borders are \u201cflying geese,\u201d a series of triangles representing the bird in flight.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThat spoke to me. A Galloping Goose quilt has to have flying geese,\u201d Ferrier said, as she pointed to a border using a feather design.<\/p>\n<p>The quilt also portrays foliage she saw during a recent Goose excursion, and towns and crossroads on railroads.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cShe did a beautiful job,\u201d said museum volunteer Rhoda Franks.<\/p>\n<p>Ferrier said she was inspired to do the project after riding the Goose last year on the Durango-Silverton Narrow Gauge Railroad.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe trip was gorgeous!\u201d she said. \u201cIt\u2019s impressive that it still works, and is a neat attraction for town.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Lew Matis, president of the Galloping Goose Historical Society, was grateful for the donation.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe really appreciate her unique contribution of artwork.
