{"id":111207,"date":"2015-07-08T15:15:37","date_gmt":"2015-07-08T21:15:37","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/dh.durangoherald.com\/tj\/dolores-team-raises-most-money-for-cancer\/"},"modified":"2015-07-08T15:15:37","modified_gmt":"2015-07-08T21:15:37","slug":"dolores-team-raises-most-money-for-cancer","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/dh.durangoherald.com\/tj\/dolores-team-raises-most-money-for-cancer\/","title":{"rendered":"Dolores team raises most money for cancer"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p><!-- gallery:3ecab0af-129a-4c26-b7fe-4ffb93e9bddc --><\/p>\n<p>The Fourth Street Girls, a fun-loving gang who work and socialize at Terri\u2019s Hair and The Ginger Jar in Dolores, helped to raise the most money at the recent Relay for Life cancer fundraiser in Cortez.<\/p>\n<p>Shelli Martin, Terri Winbourn, Sandy Lauzon, and Janice Heman, were part of a 20-person team that raised more than $6,000 to help local cancer victims.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe were motivated by our friend who was recently diagnosed,\u201d Lauzon said. \u201cEverybody knows somebody who has fought this disease, so we wanted to help.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The group started their campaign well before last Saturday\u2019s event, hosting a Navajo Taco sale that raised $850, putting on a bake sale, and a scratch ticket campaign.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMy daughter Collette took one to the brew pub and raised $194 in one night,\u201d Lauzon said. \u201cThe generosity of this community is incredible.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>At the event, thousands of dollars were raised from ice-cream sales, feathers sold as part of a fashion show, a Karaoke event, dancing competition,  walking for donations, and the old fashion stuffing money in a jar.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat\u2019s important is that the money raised stays local to help cancer victims in Montezuma County,\u201d said Heman, as she gives a customer a manicure. \u201cA lot of people here can\u2019t afford the mammogram and pap test, so this helps them.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The beauticians got their clients on board for the cause, who donated generously and helped spread the word on the friendly competition.<\/p>\n<p>This year\u2019s event was a record breaker with 59 teams raising a total of $29,209, 20 percent above the goal.
