Three of Norwood\u2019s five first half touchdowns came on plays of 20 yards or more.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThat comes down to each kid doing his own assignment,\u201d said co-head coach Josh Gardner. \u201cWe broke down assignment-wise. We lost contain a couple of times.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Leading 35-0 at half, the Mavericks returned the opening kickoff of the second half for a touchdown to extend their lead.<\/p>\n<p>The Blue Jays finally got on the board early in the fourth quarter when Adrian Hernandez intercepted a tipped pass and returned it for a touchdown.<\/p>\n<p>After another Norwood score, Axel Bonde capped off a 57-yard Blue Jays drive with a touchdown. But it was too little too late, as the running clock expired, with Mancos trailing 48-12.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI was proud of their effort,\u201d Gardner said. \u201cBut we\u2019ve got a lot of things we\u2019ve got to fix. Our special teams have to get better and our linebacker play needs to get better, but they came out there and they played with pride.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI saw more pride in them tonight than I have in the last two years,\u201d he continued. \u201cWe\u2019re a different team. I\u2019m really proud of them.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The Blue Jays (0-1) will host Rangely (1-0) in their home opener on Friday, Sept. 4 at 7 p.m.<\/p>\n<div class=\"naviga-scoreboard\">\n<h4 class=\"scoreboard-title\">Rangely game<\/h4>\n<p>After losing their home opener at Norwood on Friday, the Mancos Blue Jays (0-1) are preparing to take on the Rangely Panthers (1-0).<br>\n                Giving up big plays cost the Blue Jays against Norwood, so co-head coaches Bill Parson and Jason Gardner spent this week addressing problem areas.<br>\n                \u2018After Norwood, we\u2019re trying to clean up some of our mistakes,\u2019 Parsons said at practice on Tuesday. \u2018We\u2019re working on our timing and some of the things that looked a little rough.\u2019<br>\n                On Tuesday, while Parsons worked with the quarterbacks and running backs, Gardner spent time with the offensive line going over zone blocking schemes.<br>\n                \u2018We\u2019re working on technique and taking care of individual assignments,\u2019 he said. \u2018(Rangely) is prepared.
