\u201cI can\u2019t describe what kind of player Ryan Gurney is,\u201d defensive coordinator Keith Mikhail said on Tuesday. \u201cHe was the heart and soul of our football team.\u201d<\/p>\n
Stepping into Gurney\u2019s shoes at free safety will be freshman Vinny Conklin. Conklin filled in when Gurney went down at Aspen, calling the defensive plays and making stops.<\/p>\n
\u201cHe\u2019s a freshman, and he\u2019s by far our smallest guy on the team,\u201d Mikhail said. \u201cBut he\u2019s got the biggest heart of anybody out here on the field.\u201d<\/p>\n
Conklin and the Panthers\u2019 defense have what Mikhail believes will be, \u201cone of the hardest tests of the year,\u201d in slowing the explosive Miyamura offense.<\/p>\n
However, coach Conklin believes the team will be competitive, and with solid production on both sides of the ball, he believes they can win.<\/p>\n
\u201cOur defense is going to be tough and stingy, and the offense is going to do their job,\u201d Conklin said Tuesday. \u201cWe\u2019re going to control the ball and sustain drives and get some points on the board.\u201d<\/p>\n
