Travel experts and editors presented a list of 20 nominees, and the public decided to recognize Durango for its array of outdoor recreational activities.<\/p>\n<p>Surrounded by waterways, campgrounds, hiking trails and a 19th-century railroad, Durango was praised for offering outside recreation options for everyone year-round, whether it\u2019s floating the Animas River in the summer or hitting the ski slopes in winter.<\/p>\n<p>Durango came in second to Santa Fe. Cities and towns in California, Montana, South Dakota, Florida, North Carolina, Oregon and Wyoming also made the final cut.<\/p>\n<p>USA Today\u2019s 10 Best contest is launched every other week with a one-month window for readers to cast their votes.
