{"id":109175,"date":"2015-09-29T01:09:54","date_gmt":"2015-09-29T07:09:54","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/dh.durangoherald.com\/tj\/briefs-29\/"},"modified":"2015-09-29T01:09:54","modified_gmt":"2015-09-29T07:09:54","slug":"briefs-29","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/dh.durangoherald.com\/tj\/briefs-29\/","title":{"rendered":"Briefs"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>The Dolores Bears were shut out on Friday in a 16-0 loss at Salida.<\/p>\n<p>The loss moves Dolores to 2-2 on the season.<\/p>\n<p>The Bears begin Southern Peaks Conference play next week at home against Centauri (1-4) at 7 p.m.<\/p>\n<p>Bears volleyball team\u2019s streak snapped<\/p>\n<p>The Dolores volleyball team had its four-game win streak snapped last week.<\/p>\n<p>After winning at Mancos on Tuesday, the Bears dropped two straight conference matchups.<\/p>\n<p>On Thursday, the Norwood Mavericks knocked off the Bears in four games (25-15, 21-25, 25-14, 25-18), and on Saturday, Dolores lost to Ridgway in four (20-25, 25-21, 16-25, 19-25).<\/p>\n<p>Dolores will look to get back on track on Thursday, Oct. 1 in a non-conference game at Pagosa Springs.<\/p>\n<p>Mancos Blue Jays win homecoming game, 40-24<\/p>\n<p>The Mancos Blue Jays won their third straight game on Friday during their Homecoming matchup with the Sanford Indians.<\/p>\n<p>Senior Drew Morgan got Mancos on the board in the first quarter by scooping up a Sanford fumble and returning it for a touchdown.<\/p>\n<p>Morgan had 133 yards rushing and two rushing scores on the evening, one from 34 yards out and another from 44 yards. On both plays, Morgan faked a toss to one side then reverse pivoted and took off down the opposite sideline for scores.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou put the ball in his hands and he\u2019s dangerous,\u201d co-head coach Josh Gardner said of Morgan.<\/p>\n<p>The Blue Jays other running backs also found success, with junior Axel Bonde racking up 145 yards on the ground and showcasing his speed on a 75-yard touchdown rush, and senior Everett Strazza-Whalen scoring twice on runs of 45 yards and 31 yards, rushing for a total 137 yards.<\/p>\n<p>Mancos limited the Indians\u2019 passing attack with great play in the secondary, and sophomore Kaleb Hargraves had an interception for his third game in a row.<\/p>\n<p>After dropping their first game at Norwood, Friday\u2019s homecoming win against Sanford makes three straight victories for the Blue Jays.<\/p>\n<p>Nucla sweeps Blue Jays volleyball team<\/p>\n<p>After losing at home to Dolores on Tuesday, the Mancos Blue Jays hosted the Nucla Mustangs on Thursday.<\/p>\n<p>Nucla entered the contest at 7-1, and the Mustangs showed why they had only one loss on the season en route to a three game sweep of Mancos.<\/p>\n<p>Mancos struggled in Game 1 by doing too much and hitting the ball out of bounds, giving Nucla points, losing 13-25.<\/p>\n<p>Game two was closer, but late Mancos errors let Nucla  pull away for a 25-17 win.<\/p>\n<p>Taryn Gordanier and Nicole Hess landed spikes in game three to pull Mancos within five points, but Nucla junior Carlie Wytulka pushed the Mustangs on to a 25-15 win to take the match in three games.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe\u2019ve got to reduce our errors and score more,\u201d said Mancos coach Brittany Lang.<\/p>\n<p>Mancos has another home game on Tuesday, Sept. 29 against Dove Creek at 4 p.m.<\/p>\n<p>M-CHS band plays in  GJ marching festival<\/p>\n<p>The Montezuma-Cortez Marching Panthers went to Grand Junction on Saturday to play in the 38th annual Colorado West Marching Festival.<\/p>\n<p>There were 15 bands from western Colorado taking part in the competition at Stoker Stadium, and the Panthers proved to be one of the best.<\/p>\n<p>The Marching Panthers took first place in the parade and first place in their class in the show competition.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe students performed outstandingly,\u201d sponsor Rodney Ritthaler said in an e-mail on Sunday.<\/p>\n<p>The Journal<\/p>\n<p>The Journal<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Dolores Bears were shut out on Friday in a 16-0 loss at Salida.
