More than a decade of musical inspiration came together for Herb Folsom during a winterlong song writing session that resulted in \u201cThe Big Buffet,\u201d released this year.<\/p>\n

\u201cMaking this album has been in back of my mind for quite a while,\u201d Folsom said. \u201cIt was stream of consciousness, with some songs taking 10 minutes and others, I worked on for a couple of months.\u201d<\/p>\n

His debut album has an acoustic blues and swing style. Observational lyrics will either make you laugh or think for a minute.<\/p>\n

The title track \u201cBig Buffet (pronounced buh-FAY) focuses on Southern food indulgences, and \u201cWake up Dead\u201d reminds us to not take life too seriously.<\/p>\n

Folsom\u2019s bluesy guitar playing blends well with his commentary on the absurdities of life. He takes on conformism in \u201cKids, House, Pension,\u201d and expresses reverence for the natural world in \u201cAbove John\u2019s Canyon,\u201d and the island-inspired \u201cEnjoy It.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cI go from comedic songs, to sincere heartfelt ones. Then there\u2019s the ones with some sarcasm thrown in for sure,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe beauty of song writing is that it\u2019s left open to interpretation of the listener.\u201d<\/p>\n

Folsom played in local bands Frayed Knot, and in Roscoe with Tony Little John and the late Carlton Johnson.<\/p>\n

He gigs regularly on his \u201cWorld Farmers-Market Tour\u201d and also plays at taverns, festivals, weddings, and graduations. He gives guitar lessons, too.<\/p>\n

His musician wife, Beth Wheeler, sings and plays flute on the album. The couple recently formed their own band Hui Aloha, inspired by a trip to Hawaii.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt\u2019s fun and all about sharing your music,\u201d Folsom said.<\/p>\n
