Did you know you can go online from home and for just the cost of your library card (read: free), you can download books to your computer, tablet, phone, or ipod?

Maybe you have been hearing about ebooks and audiobooks but have never taken the time to figure out how to actually “do” them. Or you think “there’s an app for that” but don’t know how to act on that inkling to find it and install it. You’ve got questions, Mancos Public Library has answers.

On Saturday, Dec. 5, from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m., the Mancos library is holding a tech help and “petting zoo” day alongside a holiday craft “maker” event. Both adult and kid crafts will be available. Experts will be available to give you one-on-one help with your device. Time slots will be limited to one hour per person. We will also have a number of tech gadgets on display for you to try out as well as PCs running Windows 10 so you can get a look at the new operating system from Microsoft.

Can’t wait until Dec. 5? Call the library at 970-533-7600 and ask to set up a tech help appointment with Dana.

More adult computer classes will be offered soon. If you have an idea for a class, email the suggestion to tech@mancoslibrary.org. Check the library’s website, www.mancoslibrary.org, for up-to-date program and event information. And speaking of the website, look for a redesign in the near future that will feature a responsive design and improved navigation.

Library gets fiber optic cable

In other technology news, the library’s connection to the fiber optic cable running through Mancos was finally completed. The upgrade also included new network hardware. The extra bandwidth and beefier network should make for faster, more reliable browsing for patrons, both on the library’s computers and guest devices that connect to the wireless network.

The funding for this was artfully cobbled together by Director Lee Hallberg from the library’s operating budget, grant money from the Winifred Johnson Clive Foundation, and support from the Friends of the Library. Lee is also taking advantage of an 80 percent cost reimbursement available through the eRate program.

Stop by the library and check out these upgrades or go online any time at www.mancoslibrary.org. Click “Catalog” to browse the entire AspenCat catalog of books in print, ebooks, and audiobooks.

As always, thank you for supporting your Mancos Public Library.

Picture this: Come January your aching back will not answer the shovel’s call preventing you from getting to your local library to check out the fourth book in that series by that author you L-O-V-E.
