{"id":107873,"date":"2015-12-03T21:08:21","date_gmt":"2015-12-04T04:08:21","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/dh.durangoherald.com\/tj\/christmas-bazaar-to-benefit-disabled\/"},"modified":"2015-12-03T21:08:21","modified_gmt":"2015-12-04T04:08:21","slug":"christmas-bazaar-to-benefit-disabled","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/dh.durangoherald.com\/tj\/christmas-bazaar-to-benefit-disabled\/","title":{"rendered":"Christmas bazaar to benefit disabled"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>It\u2019s the season of Christmas bazaars, but a new one hosted by the Southwest Center for Independent Living is hoping raise funds for Montezuma County residents with disabilities.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe\u2019re creating a special fund for people in our area with disabilities that have a need for items that aren\u2019t covered by other funding sources,\u201d said  LuAnne Herman, an independent-living specialist for the Cortez branch of the Southwest Center for Independence.<\/p>\n<p>For example, certain items like toothpaste and toilet paper aren\u2019t covered by foodstamps, and an accessory item, like a collar for a service dog, might not be covered under disability benefits, she explained.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThere\u2019s a lot of need here, and a lack of resources,\u201d Herman said.<\/p>\n<p>The \u201cJust in the Nick of Time Holiday Boutique,\u201d scheduled for Dec. 19 at the Montezuma County Annex building, is still seeking vendors. Vendors can get a 6-foot table for $25, or if they are disabled themselves, tables are $15.<\/p>\n<p>Table fees collected from vendors will go toward the new fund.<\/p>\n<p>The Southwest Center for Independence assists disabled members of the community navigate the resources available for them, and advocates on their behalf.<\/p>\n<p>For more information on securing a table at the bazaar, or to donate to the Southwest Center for Independence, contact Herman at 570-8001 or stop by the center\u2019s office at 2409 E. Empire Street in Cortez.<\/p>\n<p>The bazaar is Dec. 19 from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. at 103 N.
